Jamba Juice May Have Had Deadly Bacterium (Southwest US)
POSTED: 11:49 am EST December 6, 2006
UPDATED: 12:23 pm EST December 6, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO -- People in the Southwest who drink Jamba Juice are getting a warning.

Web Site: List Of Affected Stores
http://jambajuice.com/alert/stores.html

Jamba Juice Co. said smoothies containing strawberries might have been contaminated with a potentially deadly bacterium.

The warning applies to smoothies sold at Jamba Juice stores in Arizona, southern Nevada and Southern California from Nov. 25 through Dec. 1.

So far the company hasn't received any reports of confirmed illnesses.

The bacterium, Listeria moncytogenes, can be deadly to young children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems. It can also cause miscarriage and stillbirths in pregnant women.

2. Poor hygiene facilities in the field
plus illegal fertilization with non composted manure are the culprits, and the problem is increasing.

The honeymoon is over. We're going to have to start cooking everything we eat, just like in every other third world country.

4. No, I think it says time for the mega-farms to leave and let Farmer
Joe back to run things the right way. See what happens when you start adding weird hormones, pesticides, fertilizers... nature is rebelling.

7. Egg-zactly!!
Put an end to the Archers/Daniels/Midland types. Just say no to commercialized farming. Encourage YOUR city or town to start a CSA program. (Community supported agriculture).

3. I'm starting to worry about food quality all the time now
That can't be good. The other day I took a look at some old soft drink cups I had sitting around and every one of them had major bacterial growth. I assume that it comes from the ice since I've read that industrial ice machines are basically bacterial breeding chambers.

This is a deadly serious issue.

5. Industrial ice machines, not so much, from my understanding.
It's those ice dispensers at restaurants that they just refill. Enough grease particulates are in the air that bacteria can live in the ice container.

6. I shouldn't have said "industrial", I meant restaurant machines
I used to work at Applebees and that ice machine was never cleaned very well. It was just wiped out with a cloth at the end of the night.

8. If you have old soft drink cups with major bacterial growth sitting around
you have a problem with your house hygiene.

10. That is scary
The strawberry/banana is my favorite, and I would probably share with everyone, including my 23-month-old. I think I'll start making my own smoothies at home from now on.

12. I routinely (used to) get my kids smoothies there.
You THINK you're doing the right thing, giving them a wonderfully healthy snack choice, and then this news. Shee-it.
