Iraqi police targeted in bombings and shootings that kill at least six

BAGHDAD, Iraq: A series of bombings and shootings struck police in Iraq on Thursday, killing at least six of them, authorities said.

In the worst attack, police Col. Bassim Mudim Abdullah and two of his guards were killed in a drive-by shooting at about 10:30 a.m. near al-Shaab Stadium in eastern Baghdad, police Lt. Bilal Ali said. The colonel was deputy chief of police in the central Saadoun district.

The gunmen were wearing civilian clothes and were in a private car, Majid said.

A mortar shell also landed near a house in the Baladiyat neighborhood in southeastern Baghdad, wounding three people, Ali said.

A parked car bomb also killed two policemen and wounded another in Fallujah, 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Baghdad, according to a local police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns.
