One day U.S. Iraq death total rises to 11

BAGHDAD, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A U.S. soldier in a machine gun nest in Ramadi was shot and killed Wednesday, bringing deaths among U.S. forces in Iraq for the day to 11.

The single day total was one of the highest since the war began in 2003, CBS News reported. Earlier, authorities had reported the deaths of 10 U.S. soldiers in four incidents.

Five of the dead were members of Task Force Lightning and were operating near Kirkuk in the north. They were killed by a roadside bomb.

"Our thoughts are with all 11 families who lost family members yesterday. Taking care of them right now is the military's highest priority," U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Garver said Thursday.

2. Pile 'em higher and then a little higher

Grass Bush

Pile the bodies high in Austerlitz and Waterloo Iraq
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; bush; I cover all.

And pile them high in Gettyburg Baghdad
And pile them high in Ypres and Vedum Kirkuk and Ramadi

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?

I am the grass bush.
Let me work.

4. Don't worry! We elected a new Congress to get you out of there!
In fact, the very moment they hit the ground running in January, we'll--

Er...

What's that?

Oh. Never mind. Carry on.
