U.S. Democrat leader Dean tells Europe his party wants to rebuild relations

PORTO, Portugal: U.S. Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean told European Socialist leaders Friday his party intended to restore close political ties with the continent.

Democrats now "have a say" in U.S. policy after last month's midterm elections brought them control of both houses of the U.S. Congress, Dean said in a speech to a congress of Europe's center-left parties in northern Portugal.

...

"It is time for the United States to renew our relationships around the world. It is time we treat our allies with respect and honesty," Dean said.

...

"The European Union has led the way in understanding how dangerous global warming is, and America should be your partner," Dean said.

1. that's great
now that we 'have a say', the'll be out of iraq in short order, cutting back on
foreign bases to introduce universal medical coverage, and then, an end to the
drugs war, cell-for-every-citizen methodology of civilization planning.

...and in the meantime, we apologize day by day for stupid land wars in asia,
and insulated leaderships that are utterly out of touch.

I'll know we have a say, when a million nonviolent americans are free of the
evil prison system for exercising their free will. Until then... tyrants.

2. Chairman Dean is more of a statesman than most of our recent presidents.
St. Bill Clinton included.

It's too bad for America and the world that Clinton's DLC buddies arranged the circular firing squad for Dean during the 2004 primary debates, and encouraged the nation to go all flaky about a rabble-rousing yell during a campaign speech. Maybe if he'd said "Hoo-hah" instead of just "Yeaaah!" he'd have had more support.

Dean was the best Presidential candidate the Democratic Party has had in the last 60 years, and I'd vote for him again in an instant.

4. This is what I can't stand about many Deaniacs
Its not the mythical abilities assigned to the good Doctor, that I can write off as enthusiam though sometimes its obnoxious.

Its the need disparage others as some means to hoist their guy even farther.

That's why your guy lost because supporters like yourself acted like assholes in the Caucus and it turned people off.

6. Well, actually it is true.
What that poster said, at least in part. I get turned off by people like yourself who lump together everyone into the category called "assholes."

Actually Clinton did play a huge role even before Iowa. He called behind the scenes for Clark, saying Dean had forfeited the right to be president because he signed the civil unions bill. The problem with that is that it was two-faced and very harmful to the GLBT community.

But it did not matter to him. He made those calls anyway.

Now, the term asshole is used so freely here at DU. One person said something favorable to Dean and against Clinton, and you called them an asshole.

And you called all Deaniacs assholes. Hell, I was never in Iowa, but if I had been there I would not have acted like an asshole. I am sure that we should have yelled louder at the behind the scenes stuff there though, the last minute shifting of votes for example..

Just because you don't like someone doesn't mean they are an asshole. In fact they just went way up in my estimation.

5. Dean is a perfect DNC chairman; it must have been destined for
him to lose so he could take the democrats on the long road back to success. I like him right where he is. If he had been our candidate in 04, the same shenanigans would have been perpetrated against him that were against Kerry. And as to Bill Clinton he is beloved around the world. Bill Clinton is brilliant and charismatic and empathetic and caring. The Europeans love him. He is also working for good in the world so please we do not need to denigrate Bill in order to appreciate Howard.

7. Recommending, and adding this.

And this.

Because this is important for the world view of us. Others are doing the same thing, but Dean is one of the few reaching out openly to this party...and that is a good thing.

10. My admiration for Dean
grows and grows.

He is, ladies and gentlemen, what is called a true statesman.
