Jeane Kirkpatrick, Ex-Ambassador, Dies

Friday December 8, 2006 2:46 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former U.N. Ambassador Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, a one-time Democrat
who switched to the Republican Party and warmly embraced Reagan era conservatism,
has died. She was 80.

Kirkpatrick's death was announced Friday at the senior staff meeting of the U.S.
mission to the United Nations, said spokesman Richard Grenell, who said that
Ambassador John Bolton asked for a moment of silence. An announcement of her death
also was posted on the Web site of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative-
oriented think tank here where she was a senior fellow.

Kirkpatrick's assistant, Andrea Harrington, said that she died in her sleep at home
in Bethesda, Md. late Thursday. The cause of death was not immediately known.

37. If they really believed in a heaven they wouldn't be involved in PNAC
or have Neo-con beliefs.

Which means they are atheists.

Wish I felt the loss of an admirable statesperson.

But she wasn't and I can't feel anything but good riddance.

38. Actually that statement is wrong
She couldn't be an ex-Democrat until AFTER 1985. Before that she was supposedly a Democrat.

13. I remember when Reagan was running in 1980, he sent her to
Chile to let Pinochet know that he wouldn't have to worry about sanctions over his human rights abuses. Most likely the RNC got a big check because of that.

15. This is harsh to say...
but good riddance.

The people of Latin America suuffered horribly because of her doctrine of coddling dicators/right-wing administrations so long as they were againts the dreaded "commies".

My one consolation is knowing she spend her last years seeing Chavez and all the other Latin American leftists swept to power. It was 20 years late, but better late than never. That must have chapped her ass. :D

16. I know, but she was an influential woman in an administration that was mostly male
I try to focus on the positive when someone dies. Her service as UN Ambassador, even as conservative as she was, was still progress for women overall.

18. Neocons don't have gender, religion, race...
their ideology defines them.

Neocons coddle the religiously insane and minorities... but only as far as they can use them in advancing their agenda.

She was an ideologically driven, evil, corrupt neocon. An ann coulter with more polish and unfortunately, more power.

She neither earned or deserves status as a role model for women.

29. A woman's ascension to political power is not always, in itself, a victory for all women.
Edited on Sat Dec-09-06 02:43 AM by Ken Burch
In the United Kingdom, women who weren't wealthy, white and safely ensconced in corporate and class power gained nothing whatsoever from the rise of Margaret Thatcher. She sent quite a number of Northern Irish women into mourning by letting their husbands or brothers starve to death rather than admit the men were political prisoners.

Palestinian women derived no benefit from the election of Golda Meir.

And Jeane Kirkpatrick shares responsibility for the deaths of thousands of Central American women, and helped prolong the suffering and oppression of Filipino and South African women by lending her support for many years to the preservation of the Marcos regime and apartheid.

To say nothing of the millions of American women who were driven to a lower standard of living by the administration she helped elect in 1980.

23. Not only that...
With her being an original neocon, she lived long enough to see her entire life's beliefs put to the test and fail miserably, then get whole sale rejected by the American voters. I'm really glad she stuck around long enough to see that. Thatcher - gone and dead. Reagan - dead, but still plaguing America. Pinochet - gone, almost dead and just about to be imprisoned. All of her good time buddy's are boiling in oil or burning in hell. I'm sure there's room for one more.

Good riddance.
