BREAKING: Cambridge, Mass- Building Fills With Smoke, Traps Workers
Building Fills With Smoke, Traps Workers

Workers Transported To Area Hospitals

BOSTON -- Emergency crews were called to a three-alarm fire Cambridge late Friday morning.

Officials said a 17-story office building at 1 Broadway at the corner of Main Street near Kendall Square in Cambridge filled with smoke at about 10:30 a.m. The building is owned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and houses a variety of different businesses.

According to reports, some people were temporarily trapped in the building.

"Nobody knew where the stairs were. There was panic and we finally found the stairs and we were running and running down 12-flights of stairs. It filled with smoke and nobody could see and people were almost getting trampled," said Katie, who works in the building.

Dozens of fire trucks and ambulances were called to the scene and several people were given oxygen. Seven people were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, but more people are expected to be transported to the facility. Several people were treated for smoke inhalation and one person was seen receiving CPR.

1. Oh dear!
Don't they have safety drills where they are shown fire exits? I hope no one is seriously hurt.

3. They really should have exit signs at ground level as well
We are suppose to crawl along the floor in a smokey situation, yet the exits signs are above doors and near ceilings, not down by the baseboards where a person in a fire would need them.

8. Well, that's why we need liberals with their government regulations or their evil trial lawyers...
to sue the companies that try to let market forces determine which buildings are safe to work in.

9. Contact the fire department about that.
They may pressure buildings to do something.

11. That's an excellent idea.
I suspect the real problem is that too many people take the elevator and therefore have no idea where to find a staircase. I can remember being the last one out of a 40 person classroom one time and the first one down the steps because everyone else was patiently waiting in front of the 6 passenger elevator!

12. Unless you're on the first elevator down...
don't bother waiting as once the fire department shows up they're going to use their elevator key to bring all the cars immediately down to the lobby (bypassing all the other floors without stopping).

Shouldn't be taking the elevator anyways in a smoke filled building or fire scenario.

13. That's why I always look for the stairs.
You should do that whenever checking into a hotel, too.
