CBS: Poll: Iraq Going Badly And Getting Worse (Bush Handling 21% JA 31%)

Americans believe the war in Iraq is going badly and getting worse, and think it's time for the U.S. either to change its strategy or start getting out, according to a CBS News poll.

Forty-three percent say the U.S. should keep fighting, but with new tactics, while 50 percent say the U.S. should begin to end its involvement altogether. Only 4 percent say the U.S. should keep fighting as it is doing now.

Just 21 percent approve of President Bush's handling of the war, the lowest number he's ever received, and an 8-point drop from just a month ago. Most of that drop has been among Republicans and conservatives. Three-quarters of Americans disapprove of how the president is handling Iraq.

Bush Job Approval is now 31% - page 7 of the pdf - down from 34% in mid-Nov. Any bets when he hits the 20s?

4. AP-Ipsos had him handling Iraq at 27% just prior to Baker rept. last Wednesday.
This new CBS poll is going over the cliff.

It's only a matter of time, people. Only a matter of time. Keep pushing.

WASHINGTON President Bush's approval rating on Iraq has slumped to a new low.
Just 27 percent of those questioned in a new A-P-Ipsos poll approve of the way he's handling the war. At the same time, dissatisfaction has climbed to an all-time high of 71 percent.

Ohio State University's John Mueller, who's an authority on presidents and public opinion, says Bush's support is continuing to erode and there no reason to think it can be turned around.

The survey was taken from Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week and has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

5. 21% - that must be a record.
I really don't understand why the House Democrats are so much against impeachment - this man has
done so much harm, not just to the US, but to the whole world. He should be called to account.

17. That's 21% approval on Iraq only
It's 31% overall, which is still a pretty big drop.

The House Dems are waiting to call for impeachment so it won't look too political/partisan.

My guess is by the end of next summer, we'll hear something like, "while I know we originally said impeachment was off the table, the revelations that have come out of this investigation are stunning in the depth of their violations of both the letter and the spirit of the law. We feel that we have no choice but to consider the Constitutional obligation of impeachment."

By that time, major revelations that will shock Americans outside of DU will have Bush in the mid 20s (or lower) on the favorability scale... so, a call for impeachment will be just following the wishes of the people.

9. "Keep fighting?" Keep fighting who?
Does anyone here believe that our soldiers have a clue who they are shooting or bombing when they are doing so?

It's a simple formula really. They simply shoot at anyone who is suspected of shooting at them or making IEDS. This has to be the rule of thumb because there are no other rational criteria.

Why would people shoot at them? Because they invaded another nation under false pretexts, without lawful justification.

This Iraq study group is really a great hoax, almost as good a media ploy as weapons of mass destruction.

Job one. Secure the energy resources and take them over for corporate America. That's a truly noble cause.

18. Saddly, they are also shooting at people who are not even...
shooting at them, sometimes just driving their car with their family in, not knowing any word in English earns them to lose their lives and/or their kids.

32. Absolutely, the language problem can't be underestimated
this is a ground level problem that goes everywhere with US forces on the ground. I have little doubt that thousands perish because of the language problem.

Not knowing the language in a hostile environment creates a level of paranoia that is difficult to imagine. So they do shoot at families in cars who don't respond to instructions in English.

Or you could rely on your iraqi interpreter? Who does he work for? What does he know?

As one American colonel said, what these "Iraqi" forces do between 12pm and 6am is anyone's guess.

14. Wow =- this is getting really interesting.
I am thinking that he will not be impeached - but forced to resign. That's kind of the feeling that I have been getting after reading all the news the last few days. I think everyone in Washington knows he is not going to change course no matter what - and that it is an ego thing with him. He keeps trying to see his place in history.

Whatever - somehow that guy has got to go. And Cheney with him.

15. Americans more pessimistic than ever about Iraq war: poll(only15% think the US can win)
Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 07:42 AM by maddezmom
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Americans have never been more pessimistic about the war in Iraq and say a change in strategy is needed, said a CBS News poll.

The poll found that 62 percent of Americans said sending troops to fight in Iraq was an error, while 34 percent still backed the decision.

According to the Gallup organization, which conducted the poll for the US television network, not even during the Vietnam conflict did so many Americans oppose the war.

Fifty-two percent said the situation in Iraq is getting worse, while just eight percent say the situation is getting better.

Only 15 percent of those polled said that the United States would win in Iraq, a new low.

19. Impeach These Fools!!!!
After the PR show and pony ride Bubble Boy will surge 20,000 plus more troops into the Iraqi theatre. Of course those are only replacements for the casualties we have already sustained. http://www.icasualties.org/oif/default.aspx
He'll declare fight vs terrorism..for democracy... for freedom etc... etc.. He and Cheney have had 6 yrs to pull the wool over the american publics eyes... they'll continue to do it...

Demand action from the 110th Congress!!! call, write, do something!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pelosi may need a prod...

Impeach Bush/Cheney:

Before the House Judiciary Committee can put together the Articles of Impeachment, someone must initiate the impeachment procedure. Most often, this occurs when members of the House pass a resolution. Another method outlined in the manual, however, is for individual citizens to submit a memorial for impeachment.

24. Absolutely! Welcome to DU!
Couldn't agree more!

Glad you're here - and make sure you keep aggitating. That means - don't forget to call your congressperson's office. And your senators. AND MAYBE somebody else's, too. TOLL FREE Capitol Hill numbers below, in my sig line.

If they think we don't care, THEY WON'T, EITHER!!!!

The ONLY reason a bush rubberstamper like Senator Gordon Smith, R-OR, made the speech he delivered at the end of the session last Friday was because he looked at the election results and he's seen the polls, and he's realized WE DO CARE. DEEPLY!!! Enough to call a halt to the majorities and the control and all the power his party enjoyed, and send a lot of 'em to the unemployment line. And if DOESN'T take this seriously, he knows HE'S NEXT (specially since he has to run for reelection, himself, in '08).

Very appropriate when CNN ran a story about latest terrible bombing in Iraq yesterday, the screen continued showing the caption "no end to the misery" while they showed footage of Bush flanked by Cheney and Rice walking out of the Oval Office.

22. Yet the giggling murder monkey....
refuses to listen to Poppy's Pals, to anyone actually, and continues to believe that a great victory will be delivered to him either by divine intervention or "staying the course". No one in his immediate vacinity dares tell him the truth about the situation in Iraq other than, "things aren't going as well as we'd like right now", so the ignorant bubble-boy blissfully believes he's made all the right choices and wouldn't change a thing if he had it to do all over again. :puke:

I don't know about you folks but if I had a bunch of ass kissing toadies constantly tip toeing around me telling me, "great job boss, great job" when everything is obviously going to hell in a hand-basket, I'd be firing said ass kissing toadies and hiring some NEW talent who had the guts to stand up to me. I guess that doesn't mesh with Bush's enormous ego though. He actually WANTS to be told he's doing a great job even when everything he does turns to shit. Ever the eternal optimist, while 70% of Americans think he's dog vomit there's still 30% THAT DON'T, and THOSE are the people George Bush governs for. Those 70% are just uninformed, fact based fools while that solid 30% are the REAL Americans who know that "truthiness" is next to godliness. :banghead:

Wake me when The House draws up articles of impeachment. Until then I'm going to hibernate for mental health reasons. :silly:

25. Iraq solution
Pay them off. Appeal to their greed. Pay the Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds billions of dollars in cash to reduce the violence, form a unity government, and throw Al Qaeda out of Iraq. Make the continuing, diminishing payments contingent on measurable results. Let them decide how to accomplish the objectives. It's far cheaper than continuing the war.

27. Three Years and Counting
Bush invaded a neutral country, why, he won't give the American people a clue. The carnage continues hourly and bush does not have a CLUE about how to end this either. How can he sit in his secluded office and let these horrific events keep occurring and not do something.

Generals, and other military individuals have told him the policy of Stay the Course, oh excuse me, Moving ahead, is not working. That we must withdraw from Iraq. His own hand picked committed have told him we must have a plan to withdraw from Iraq. Now he is gathering more advisor's, more committee members, he will continue until he gets a group of people that tell him Iraq is coming along fine.

How can this president continue to follow his failed course in Iraq, when the American people do not want this policy. I will tell you one thing, bush will follow his failed course until he gets the American people to follow and agree with him. To leave a "legacy" he is ruining this country. He is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi, and the death of thousands of our military. He has ruined the infantries of that country, destroyed electric, clean water homes, businesses and still he forges ahead on the failed course.

He has poured trillions of our tax dollars into this failed venture. He has put this country in debt for generations to come. He has ruined the good name and reputation of this great country of ours that is going to take many many generations to repair.

I have one question. WHY, WHY IS THIS LITTLE MINDED MAN DONE AND IS STILL DOING THIS.

30. I'm Paranoid
There is a larger problem looming in the middle east... people will need to connect the dots... Remember when Darth Cheney went to Saudi Arabia for his 2 hr meeting with the Royal Family? Of course there was a special message that had to be conveyed personally... now we have this...Saudi Ambassador Abruptly Resigns, Leaves Washington. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/11/AR2006121101333.html OK then CNN reports about Saudi Arabia getting ready to stop the Iranian Crecent Ring... Yeah call me paranoid... But I'm pretty sure sides are being drawn up... Sunni vs Shia. But this fight will be a REGIONAL fight. It will assuredly bring civil war to more than 1 middle eastern country. Jordan...Egypt... Lebanon take your pick. Bubble Boy George really tipped over a bucket of shit this time.... He Bush/Cheney must be trying to figure a way to use the comming conflict to his political advantage... I just cant figure out what angle he can use. If he backs the Sunni he de facto backs Bin Ladden... Backs the Shia he backs the evil empire... looks like no win... but the slime bags gonna try.

31. All according to plan.
GWB is narcissistic enough to believe that he's been chosen by God to ignite the war to end all wars in the middle east to bring about the resurrection etc, etc (the ultimate neocon agenda). I don't think any of this bothers him. He actually stated that long after his term he'll still be able to look himself in the mirror (and how he must love mirrors) and believe that he's done a good job.
