'Mallard Fillmore' creator arrested for DUI

Hoosier Edward Bruce Tinsley, creator of the conservative comic strip Mallard Fillmore, was arrested in Columbus Dec. 4 and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence -- his second alcohol-related arrest in less that four months, according to the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department.

Tinsley, 48, who lives in Columbus, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.14 -- almost twice the level at which an Indiana driver is considered intoxicated. He posted $755 bond.

Until today, when I looked it up. The samples I saw were from around election day, with plenty of cute little subliminal references to the idea that people are not smart enough to vote, and the getting busloads of people together and telling them how to vote on the way there is wrong. I bet he wasn't referring to the church groups from the bible belt on that one, eh?

Even reading his bio from King Features, you get the feeling the guy is a total prick.

I have yet to read anything by this guy that's even remotely humorous. I'd rather sit down with the entire Ernie Bushmiller portfolio (Nancy) than read one episode of Mallard Fillmore. Unfortunately, there is something in human nature that causes many of us to slow down and rubberneck as we pass an accident and then turn away disgusted with ourselves for looking. That's my explanation for any familiarity with Tinsley's work.

A few years ago the newspaper where I live took a survey regarding the comic section and said they'd act on the results. Mallard Fillmore took an ass whipping, with the vast majority wanting it removed (way more than wanted Doonesbury removed). It is still being published daily. Maybe they'll take another look at it now.
