UPS seeking more job cuts, offers severance to 650 workers
Posted on Tue, Dec. 12, 2006

ATLANTA - UPS Inc., the world's largest shipping carrier, is seeking more job cuts on top of 1,200 positions in its logistics unit it previously said it would cut.

The Atlanta-based company has offered voluntary severance packages to roughly 650 employees at its headquarters and in its Supply Chain Solutions division in the United States.

Those receiving the offers are at least 50 years old and have at least 10 years of experience, spokesman Norman Black said Monday.

The company did not disclose a goal of how many people it hoped would take the severance offers, and Black declined to say whether there would be any forced layoffs if not enough people take the offers.

1. Yes, get rid of those older experienced workers
and then wonder why the wheels come off the wagon later on down the road.....

2. And they are going to outsource these jobs how?
Ok, that was a joke--but why are they letting so many people go? Are they in financial trouble? Or do they plan to hire younger workers later? If so, isn't this age discrimination hiding in a cloak of "volunteer retirements"?

11. Nah, they'll just go to perma-temps
No insurance, no 401k none of those pesky costly employee "incentives".

3. So when do we start taking the over-50's out to beat in their heads?
The country thinks the baby-boom is gonna be a burden? Imagine a baby-boom that has had no health benefits and only minimum wage work for the 20 years leading up to retirement at 70.

That's a problem that's in need of pondering. These decisions surely aren't making things easier for the future of society.

6. STRONG and gettin' STRONGER!
It's the worker's fault. Should have prepared. Should have seen this coming. They needed to get smarter, because as you know, a modern American worker isn't worth shiznit unless he has, oh, at least 2 masters degrees and in school for his PhD. Because a master's degree is an iron clad guarandamnTEE you won't get fired.

Don't these silly workers realize that an economy is all about how much money the "betters" can have? Their needs DO. NOT. MATTER. and that's just the way it has been, is, and always will be!

14.  I suppose since people over 50 are in ruins
Maybe this is where they intend on getting the next set of troops .
I have found at 57 it is almost impossible to find a good job . It is said there is no age discrimination but how on earth would one prove that ?

I made a desent income 2 years ago , now every single job I interview for never calls back even though I have passed all their tests .

Even without benefits they are only interested in the younger workers thinking if you are over 50 you are out of touch . Why not just round up all the older people such as me and gas us and get it over with , what future will I to deal with and others like me who find that suddenly they are no longer usefull .
