Senator [McCain]: Illegal images must be reported
Edited on Tue Dec-12-06 08:21 PM by Nutmegger
Millions of commercial Web sites and personal blogs would be required to report illegal images or videos posted by their users or pay fines of up to $300,000, if a new proposal in the U.S. Senate came into law.

The legislation, drafted by Sen. John McCain and obtained by CNET News.com, would also require Web sites that offer user profiles to delete pages posted by sex offenders.

In a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday, the Arizona Republican and former presidential candidate warned that "technology has contributed to the greater distribution and availability, and, some believe, desire for child pornography." McCain scored 31 of 100 points on a News.com 2006 election guide scoring technology-related votes.

After child pornography or some forms of "obscenity" are found and reported, the Web site must retain any "information relating to the facts or circumstances" of the incident for at least six months. Webmasters would be immune from civil and criminal liability if they followed the specified procedures exactly.

OMG I'm so tired of this crap. This will do nothing but provide people with yet another sense of false security. Have the ISP's retain data? Sure why not, you might catch a criminal. It's all crap.

1. Hey McCain: DON'T TREAD ON ME!
The internet should not be regulated by the government in such a way as to obstruct the public domain.

2. I don't know of any torrent / shareware admin that puts up with a single
shred of child-porn. In fact, most specifically state in their mission statement that if they find that you uploaded child-porn for sharing they will report you to every agency possible and work with them to put you in jail even if that means testifying in court against you at their own personal expense.

Of course, other admins might feel different, but I never seen an attitude otherwise.

14. Only oil companies, polluters, MSM, banks, etc. can self-regulate
The rest of us aren't capable of making informed decisions and thus must be treated as children.

F*ck John McCain. He's ridden his POW horse just about as far as it will go.

4. Merely routine pre-Presidential pandering
Lets see which of the candidates can out do the others. We should see some really impressive displays in the upcoming days. It's only two years away, just think of what they will come up with next. Mitt burning with the fires of Mormon, McCain the suddenly Righteous, Ms. Clinton will surely find a few iniquitous video games (or something worse) out there, and the other candidates certainly will not be outdone in the frenzied damning of our societal ills...

10. Exactly ...
It's going to be fun in January to watch the Dems actually getting something done, while freaks like McCain are still stewing over this kind of B.S. ("Wait, wait! What about the INTERNET? What about ABORTION? What about GAY MARRIAGE? What about all the IMPORTANT STUFF? All you guys want to do is talk about HEALTH CARE and MINIMUM WAGE and OVERSIGHT ... I'm taking my ball and going home!")

5. What horseshit is this?
I am of the "string 'em up by their balls" school when it comes to child molesters, but it sounds to me like McCain is saying that if a crime, for which you have no responsibility, happens on your "premises" then YOU are guilty, and YOU must play the policeman and if you don't do a good enough job of it to suit old Flyboy, it's YOUR fault and you WILL be punished.

So, to translate this from the virtual to the physical world, if a child gets snatched out of a WAL-MART, must WAL-MART send all their employees out to try to find the kidnapper? And if they don't catch the perv, the owners of WAL MART are punished for it? This seems....absurd to me.

Sounds like buck-passing to me, or maybe I'm not getting the nuance here?

8. Hey, if they cannot stop net neutrality..how else can they shut down the blogs?
If each individual who even has a presence on the web is suddenly cop, investigator, and prosecutor...how can they survive? THEY CANNOT!

20. Here's what's ludicrous about his proposal... anyone who operates any kind of on-line forum
Edited on Wed Dec-13-06 11:01 AM by truthisfreedom
for anything whatsoever can be the victim of illegal image posting. In order to "preserve" the evidential trail, the "webmaster" in this case would have to shut down the forum and leave it exactly in the state it was in for 6 months on the server! Basically, anyone who wanted to shut down any forum for the purposes of destroying commerce or silencing free speech could anonymously post an illegal image on that forum.

McCain's ill-planned law would make it financially and logistically impossible for any small business to operate a question-and-answer forum on their website for fear of the $300k fine or, worse, being held responsible for images they stored on their computers which were placed there by criminals!

post pornography on it if what McCain says becomes law...viola...all subject to 300,000 fines...MSM would spend the rest of their little lives trying to shut down the blogosphere! TRUST ME!

16. Here's an idea, McCain
Fine the parents who let their kids get on the internet without supervision...the parents who brought up their kids to be the kind of sluts who'll get face-to-face with a stranger they meet on the internet.

Or better yet....

JUST ENFORCE THE EXISTING LAWS, RETARD!

24. Why Is It [div class="excerpt"] on DU and [quote] everywhere else?
quote doesn't do anything useful on DU.
On every other board I'm on, it does what div class="excerpt" does here.

same for color being "font color" here, and size being "font size".

All the normal bbcode tools know about color and quote.

It'd be dead simple to fix up the quote tag, I agree. But for some reason they seem not to want to.
