Prop 2 (anti-affirmative action) backers to take campaign to other states
Buoyed by a landmark victory in Michigan in November, backers of the anti-affirmative action Michigan Civil Rights Initiative -- also known as Proposal 2 -- are set to announce plans today for similar ballot proposals in other states in 2008.

Seven states, all west of the Mississippi River, are candidates for ballot efforts, said Jennifer Gratz, the Southgate native who directed the MCRI campaign and will participate in today's announcement.

In an interview Tuesday, she declined to say how many states ultimately would be targeted in 2008, but said: "We're definitely looking at multiple states."

Affirmative action proponents, who said they expected as much, continue to look for ways to blunt the appeal of the MCRI approach -- banning the use of race and gender preferences in government hiring, contracting and university admissions.

1. I wonder if they have a laundress with them?
To wash the wardrobe of sheets? :sarcasm:

3. How can we forget..
...about the lawlessness, lynching, humiliation, degradation, discrimination, disenfranchisement, segregation, racism and constitutional violations that all African-Americans went through after slavery ended. Affirmative Action is only trying to make amends for those violations of their rights.

4. The counter claim to that is that those alive today
have suffered little of that and that those not being helped are somehow being discriminated against. Its an argument that resonates well across the county, as demonstrated by Prop 2 and its equivalent in California and elsewhere. Most people believe that merit in the end is the best way. What they are not understanding is that unfair advantage exists today.

To me the real answer is quality schools and health care for all, and I would sacrifice busing, the current affirmative action approaches, and other failed tools to get there. That gets us to the merit position without the perception of punishing others. It also requires real investment in education and health care and a rethinking of priorities in our society. Then again, no one said it would be easy.
