Iran, Iraq sign 48 documents for co-operation: Envoy

Baghdad, Dec 13: Iran's Ambassador to Iraq Hassan Kazemi Qomi said that Tehran and Baghdad have signed 48 documents for expansion of bilateral co-operation.

Speaking to Irna in an exclusive interview, Kazemi Qomi assessed as "positive" the recent visit by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani to Tehran. "Iran and Iraq have inked documents to step up relations in the economic, political, cultural, scientific and defense fields," he said.

"In the economic field, the sides have signed agreements for co-operation in the fields of oil, electricity, transportation, road-building and transit of goods" he added.

"Iran exports some 140 MW electricity to Iraq via a pipeline from Iranian town of Sar-e Pol-e Zahab to Iraqi city of Baqouba."

The Ambassador noted that Talabani's recent visit to Iran took place to materialise the agreements, saying the Iraqi delegation which accompanied the President paved the way for implementation of the accords previously signed between Tehran and Baghdad in its meetings with Iranian officials.

1. The US needs to leave Iraq immediately. The US is only in the way.
The US has nothing for Iraq except death and injury. Let the Iraqis have their own country back. The US should set up a huge rebuilding trust fund, of some sort, and let the Iraqi manage their own affairs. The US should butt-out. This murderous meddling in Iraq is obscene and completely counter-productive. All funding for the continuation of this senseless war should be cut off as the first act of the new US congress, period. The Democrats have control of both houses of congress, so they must now act.
