RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AFP) - Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniya was stuck at the Gaza border after Israel closed a crossing to prevent him from bringing "tens of millions of dollars" into the impoverished coastal strip after a tour of Arab states and Iran.
The closure sparked the storming of the border terminal by dozens of armed Hamas gunmen who forced their way inside, sparking panic among travelers and sending European Union observers fleeing the building.
At least 13 Palestinians were wounded by gunfire after the militants went on a rampage inside the terminal building, smashing windows and furniture and firing into the air and at the building itself.
An Egyptian security source in Gaza said Israel and Cairo had reached a compromise under which Haniya would be allowed to pass, but would have to leave behind the 35 million dollars that he was reported to be carrying.
The money would be deposited into an Egyptian bank to be transferred later to a
Palestinian Authority account, the source said on condition of anonymity.
