Editor&Publisher/AP: Study of Americans' Media Use Finds Web Finally Passing Newspapers
Study of Americans' Media Use Finds Web Finally Passing Newspapers
Published: December 15, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Americans spend more time watching TV, listening to the radio, surfing the Internet and reading newspapers, it seems, than anything else except breathing.

In fact, media use has risen every year since the start of the decade, helped by faster and easier ways to get information and entertainment, according to statistics in a new government report.

Next year, Americans are projected to spend more than 9 1/2 hours a day with the media, though hours spent doing two things at once, such as watching TV and using the Internet, are counted twice in the report.

"There are more TVs than people and there's a TV, in many houses, in every room," said Patricia McDonough, senior vice president at Nielsen Media Research. "For teenagers, being on the Internet and watching TV at the same time are not mutually exclusive."

Americans spend an average of 4 1/2 hours a day watching TV, far more time than they spend on any other medium. Next come the radio and the Internet. Reading newspapers is fourth, passed this year by Internet use....

1. The Official Reason: People are sick of Corporate Crapola Propaganda
Edited on Fri Dec-15-06 03:43 PM by SpiralHawk
and the corporate media's totaly toady approach to Commander AWOL and the republicon Whack Off Cronies who are robbing us blind and farting up the environment for our children, not to mention sending our sons and daughters off to die in Iraq for the sake of repulicon crony oil profits.

How about some truth once in a while? Is that TOooooooo much to ask? Apparently.

The people of the USA see through you corporate toadies. Get a frikkin clue.

Just tell us the truth. You can start with how Commander AWOL completely failed America on 9/11, and then flew the bin Laden clan home First Class.

2. That's exactly right
My hometown paper- the Oregoninan is owned by out of state interests and constantly slants its copy to run cover for the far right- and also publishes the likes of Krauthamer and other extremists.

It's also poorly written- its reporters have been caught "making up facts," and so has become the butt of many jokes around here. No wonder circulation is plunging.

3. Most newsrooms...
are staffed by empty heads and run by morons.
Got to get those stories down to 6 inches. Got to run more recipes and high school sports.
Got to find more asinine columnists.
Memo to newspaper owners: Fuck off. Your day is over.

6. That's the beginning of the end for the GOP

Without TV and newspapers we wouldn't have been saddled with the Worst Resident Ever.

Edit: I mean for chrissakes, we get gambling addict/submissive Bill Bennett expounding on morality, Newt Gingrich on morals AND government ethics, David Horowitz and Howard Kurtz on media balance, and Ann Coulter on just about everything. Only the 20,000,000 Limbeciles pay any attention to the C-whoreporate media

7. multitasking isn't only for teens
i always have my laptop with me when i'm watching the teevee. well, when i'm not knitting or crocheting, which i've recently taken up after a good long time.

often when watching the tube, i will do an immediate net search about something i saw .

i never read newspapers anymore unless they are online, haven't for about 5 years now.
