U.S. military taking tougher line with Guantanamo detainees
UPDATED: 10:48, December 17, 2006
U.S. military taking tougher line with Guantanamo detainees

The authorities in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have clamped down decisively in recent months on terrorist suspects after two years in which the U.S. military sought to manage them there with incentives for good behavior, steady improvements in their living conditions and even dialogue with prison leaders, The New York Times reported Saturday.

Security procedures have been tightened, and group activities have been scaled back at the military prison, the report said.

The shift reflected the military's analysis - after a series of hunger strikes, a riot last May and three suicides by detainees in June - that earlier efforts to ease restrictions on the detainees had gone too far, officials were quoted as saying.

With the retrofitting of Camp 6 and the near-emptying of another showcase camp for compliant prisoners, military officials said about three-fourths of the detainees would eventually be held in maximum-security cells. That was a stark departure from earlier plans to hold a similar number in medium-security units.

2. Is it me or is this just insane?
"The shift reflected the military's analysis - after a series of hunger strikes, a riot last May and three suicides by detainees in June - that earlier efforts to ease restrictions on the detainees had gone too far, officials were quoted as saying."

Let me get this straight: After easing restrictions (improving conditions) the detainees thought it better to go without food, riot, and in three cases, end their lives.

4. How do we know they haven't been doing that?
These people are, essentially, "disappeared." For the most part, there is no accounting for who is there and what is happening to them.

The last thing bush wants is to have survivors of his death camp tell the story of what is really happening there.

10. Some day those walls will be viewed by all people with the loathing and
disgust that the French felt for the Bastille.

That this abomination continues tells you just about where we stand as to restoring democracy in the U.S.A.

11. Is it possible to take a tougher line?
The line already was, "you're not American, and therefore not human, and once you are accused of unlawful enemy combatant-ness, that's it, no chance to explain why it might not be so."

12. Held for years without charge or counsel
And the public acknowledgment that a majority of the people being held there never did anything wrong, and now the military is going to "get tough" with a bunch of unarmed civilians who can't fight back and who can't get away?

Tell me again how "honorable" it is to serve in the military? Because I have to tell you that stories like this one keep making me think that it's little more than a club of bullies, thugs and sadists.
