WASHINGTON -- Three congressmen said the U.S. Coast Guard is giving up on its plan to conduct live machine-gun firing exercises on the Great Lakes.
The lawmakers said the Coast Guard's commandant has told them the controversial proposal will be withdrawn.
A Coast Guard spokesman could not immediately comment.
The plan has been criticized by several U.S. and Canadian mayors, business leaders and environmentalists who said it could be unsafe and disruptive.
Coast Guard officials had stressed in hearings around the lakes that live fire practice was an essential part of weapons training.
