NATO jets kill several Taliban in Afghanistan
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AFP) - NATO-led warplanes dropped guided bombs on a Taliban command post in southern Afghanistan overnight, killing a number of insurgents, the alliance has said.

The airstrike by International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) jets on a compound in the Taliban-dominated Panjwayi district of southern Kandahar province was part of a fresh anti-insurgent offensive launched this week.

"Overnight, ISAF forces launched a precision airstrike against a known insurgent command and logistics post in an isolated area of the Panjwayi district," ISAF said in a statement.

It did not give details of casualties, but an ISAF military official speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP that "a number of Taliban were killed in the air raid".

1. Ho boy
On the one hand, the Taliban are some awful sumbitches. On the other hand, a "command and logistics post" in Kandahar is almost certainly known to the locals as "our village."

As long as Pakistan continues to let the Taliban have their own province along the Afghan border, anyone in Afghanistan is going to be involved in warfare with them...forever.

2. NATO forces kill 50 militants in Afghan operation
KABUL (AFP) - NATO-led and Afghan forces have killed around 50 Taliban insurgents in a fresh anti-militant sweep in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said.

Operation "Baaz Tsuka" (Falcon's Summit) was launched last Friday by hundreds of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Afghan troops in the Panjwayi and Zhare districts of Kandahar province.

"We have cleared one large and two small villages of Taliban. We have killed about 50 Taliban," NATO spokesman Brigadier Richard Nugee told a press conference in Kabul on Wednesday.

The spokesman said there had been no Afghan army or NATO casualties during the operation.

Maybe even a hunnert and fifty! And every last one of them a card-carrying member of the Taliban.

3. Poor bastards...
.. I don't mean the Taliban... I mean the poor civilians in the area who got clobbered along with - and maybe instead of - the Taliban.

The US and NATO have to reset the computers on those superaccurate laser-guided munitions to "Bad Guys" rather than "To Whom It May Concern".

5. So we used million-dollar aircraft and millions in munitions to do this?
The Taliban will bankrupt the West by causing us to use all our expensive weapons and munitions to kill bearded men on donkeys.

6. Maybe they'll hike up these "body count" reports on the Corporate MSN?
If so, we'll win this war just like we kicked ass in Vietnam, i.e., keeping the peasants pleased with scores of "enemy kill" stories. :sarcasm:
