CNN Poll: Only 11% Back Call to Send More Troops to Iraq
Editor&Publisher: CNN Poll: Only 11% Back Call to Send More Troops to Iraq
By E&P Staff
Published: December 18, 2006

NEW YORK -- President Bush, according to reports, is strongly considering sending a "surge" of troops to Iraq in the new year -- 20,000 or more. Sen. John McCain and Sen. Joe Lieberman have already backed such a plan. But a new poll for CNN released Monday found that this idea draws the support of only 11 percent of Americans.

Fewer than a third of Americans still support the war in Iraq, and more than half say they want U.S. troops out of the country within a year, according to the CNN poll. This 31 percent support marked a new low in the Opinion Research survey.

"Nearly three-quarters said Bush administration policy needs a complete overhaul or major changes. But only 11 percent of those polled backed calls to send more American troops to Iraq, as President Bush is said to be considering," CNN said....

Only 32 percent said they would support keeping U.S. troops in Iraq "as long as necessary" to hand over control to a new Iraqi government. By comparison, 21 percent said they wanted to see Americans leave immediately, and 33 percent said they wanted to see a U.S. withdrawal within a year.

6. NASTY RESULT OF CRIMINAL WAR **GRAPHIC****

When an IED exploded near his Humvee, Sandoval, a gunner, was critically injured.

Shrapnel was embedded in Sandoval's brain and surgeons removed a third of his brain and half of his skull to save his life.

Now, Sandoval, 26, is able to stand, even walk with help. Speech is still difficult but he has regained many of his cerebral functions with the exception of short-term memory.

9. A talking point worth remembering, BTW...
when a right-winger trieds to deflect Vietnam comparisons because so many fewer GI's have been killed in Iraq. I have no doubt at all that we be talking north of 25,000 KIA if we were using 1960's medical technology. Bear in mind that CPR was still a comparatively recent development back then.

10. Though considerate, I don't think your warning is necessary.
(I do not mean this as a criticism) This guy's injuries are nothing for him to be ashamed of, and just part of life. This is what war does, folks. People need to assess for themselves whether the cost is worth it - his state is part of that equation.

2. Wow, are the chickenhawks getting nervous??
Are the flag waving cowards thinking this war stuff won't be any fun if it involves me? Are they watching the news and seeing how the Marines and Army are needing more manpower and that bush just wants to send more and more and more americans into his never ending war? Are the patriotic "conservatives" amongst us losing sleep at night thinking of the possibility of actually having to do something for their country whether they want to or not? The cockles of my heart are warming.

3. Are you listening, Sens. Reid and Clinton?
Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 12:55 PM by marmar
The voters sent a message in November, and sending more troops wasn't it. So stop with all of this crazy talk about supporting more troops if..... There is no "if."
