Forza Italia said that the surgery at the Cleveland Clinic was to correct an irregular heartbeat, the Italian news agency ANSA said. The operation was performed by Dr. Andrea Natale, a Sicilian-born heart specialist based at the clinic.
The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported Sunday that Berlusconi got advice from President George Bush on where to go for treatment.
Berlusconi went through three days of tests in Italy after he collapsed at a rally on Nov. 26. At the time, he said his brief fainting fit was caused by stress, exhaustion and the heat in the hall.
