Hevesi is ready to resign (NY State Controller)
State Controller Alan Hevesi is prepared to announce his resignation tomorrow to end a damaging criminal probe into his use of a state worker as his wife's chauffeur, sources familiar with his decision told the Daily News yesterday.
Hevesi has told colleagues he will accept the terms of a deal discussed with Albany County District Attorney David Soares - one that will require him to step down and plead guilty to an unspecified charge, the sources said.

A source familiar with the negotiations said the Queens Democrat will appear in Albany court tomorrow and announce his plans to resign.

...snip...

A number of Democrats, including Brooklyn Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, Westchester County Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, Buffalo City Controller Andy SanFilippo and Wall Streeter William Mulrow, have surfaced as potential replacements for Hevesi.

Because there are many more Democrats in the Legislature than Republicans, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) is expected to have a large say in filling the vacancy should Hevesi walk the plank as expected.

2. One of the BEST crooks?
Hevesi has admitted stealing about $200,000, and has to pay that back. How could he be one of the best?

3. He has been a really good comptroller...
who did something stupid. That's why the voters returned him to office, even knowing the problem, rather than vote for the rank incompetant masquerading as his repuke challenger.

6. Um, no we didn't...
I, for one, voted for him knowing he was crooked, but also knowing that action would be taken to get rid of him after the election, when Spitzer could control the selection process.

7. That too but...
the challenger was acknowledged to know little about being a comptroller.

10. Did you read where he asked about it BEFORE doing it?
He knew he had to pay the money back. He didn't. He screwed up. But in managing OUR money, he was wonderful. WONDERFUL.

And I didn't vote for him again so Spitzer could replace him. I voted for him to keep managing the money.

11. I want to know why Pataki didn't have to resign
For having dinners delivered from the Governor's mansion to his actual residence. Oh but excuse me, that's so much more valid than having one's physically incapacitated spouse driven around.

Libby Pataki gets chauffeured everywhere, but that's OK too.

4. I don't post often at all, but...
My reply to this is, "THANK GOODNESS!"

As a former New Yorker, please allow me to say that it's about time this crook got out of government.

It is sleazes like Hevesi who help to give Democrats a bad name.

5. As a current New Yorker
I can only agree.

I can't imagine how anyone can say that he's "one of the best" other than solely because he has a "-D" next to his name.

He stole from the state, he lied about it, he refused to step down.

Good Riddance.

8. He was one of the few dems I didn't vote for.
If Dems are going to remain an attractive choice, corruption has to be fought within the party as much as outside.

9. This is a better outcome than him losing in November.
Some Democrats argued to vote against him. I disagreed. No position should be surrendered to the GOP.
