Congressman Criticized for Muslim Letter

Congressman Criticized for Muslim Letter

A Republican congressman has told constituents that unless immigration is tightened, "many more Muslims" will be elected and follow the lead of a recently elected lawmaker who plans to use the Quran at his ceremonial swearing-in.
Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Va., made the comments in a letter sent earlier this month to hundreds of constituents who had written to him about Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat and the first Muslim elected to Congress. Goode's letter triggered angry responses from a New Jersey congressman and an Islamic civil rights group.

...

Meanwhile, Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., D-N.J., wrote to Goode on Wednesday saying that he was "greatly disappointed and in fact startled" by Goode's letter.

"I take your remarks as personally offensive to the large community of Muslim-Americans I represent in the Eighth District of New Jersey," Pascrell wrote.

...

Goode spokesman Linwood Duncan said Wednesday that no apology was forthcoming.

"The only statement the congressman has is that he stands by the letter," Duncan said.

1. Great strategy...
After all, since we've pissed off basically every Muslim outside of the US, why not piss of the ones here, too?

After all, it isn't bigotry if you hate everybody equally, right? :sarcasm:

23. Why do voters keep electing these ignorant people to represent them?
Does Goode know the difference between a natural born citizen and immigrants?

Edited on Thu Dec-21-06 12:36 PM by nini
There are plenty of Muslims here now and born in this country who are not from Iraq/Iran/Pakistan etc.. or of an Middle Eastern descent.

http://www.adherents.com/rel_USA.html#religions

According to this chart, Muslims only 0.5% of the US population.

http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/tables/07s0073.xls

In this chart, Muslims are around 1%. Suffice to say, the number will need to grow significantly before most Americans get a clue.

yes, we know snail mail is better, but I make it a point to verbally piss off at least one gop'er or fundie a day, and since I live just down the road from dobbie and haggard (well, USED to, in his case), I have LOTS of opportunities.

12. Unfortunately...
that is the way it is in the US!

Keith Ellison was born in Detroit, MI and is an African American who converted to Islam. He is a lawyer and has, for the most part, a progressive record in the Minnesota State House of Representatives. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

There are about 35,000 of them. But a single Muslim congressman in a country with over seven million Muslims is apocalyptic.

Edited on Thu Dec-21-06 06:04 PM by SemperEadem
The only thing this knucklehead is going to accomplish is making this country even more divided than it already is. This country was founded on relgious FREEDOM, not conformity to a state religion---that is the very reason WHY the US of A exists. Religious wars have saturated the earth for eons with the blood of those killed for their beliefs. Anyone who extolls people to intolerance of other religions based upon their fear and their weakness in their own beliefs is such that they feel they must force them upon others is wrong and their viewpoint should not be upheld as a model of anything in this country. This country was not founded as a Christian nation. Period. Fuck what you heard or was taught in bible class. There is nothing about a Christian in America that is persecuted. No one is telling them they can't hold office. No one is telling them they can't live in a particular community. No one is telling them they can't go shopping in the store of their choice. No one is keeping them from their 5th go-round at the Smorgasbord. They are nothing like the first Christians who had to really deal with persecution and live in fear of their lives. It's too bad they are not being reminded of this little thing every time they open up their silly mouths and expose their ignorance.

Funny how no Christians were persecuted when McVeigh and Nichols blew up the Murrah federal building in OK City. No one snatched a white male christian off the street and beat him to death and made an example of him once they found out the identity of who was responsible.

22. I think Goode has more to do w/ AIPAC/Zionist demonization of
Muslims, after I tracked the guy through Google. I seriously doubt that the Bible Goode will swear upon has in it the New Testament.

BTW,
many editions of the Koran contain BOTH the Old Testament and the New Testament.

20. Pure ugliness
"I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims
in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration
policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and
beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent
our resources from being swamped."
