President issues 16 pardons, commutes sentence of man convicted on drug charges

A few days after acknowledging that the U.S. could be losing the war in Iraq, President Bush did something else unusual: He issued 16 pardons and commuted the sentence of one prisoner.

Bush is among the stingiest of postwar presidents on pardons, with 113 during his nearly six years in the White House. President Clinton issued 457 in eight years in office. Bush's father, George H. W. Bush, issued 77 in four years. President Reagan issued 406 in eight years, and President Carter issued 563 in four years.

...
___

ABOUT THE LATEST: Seven of the 16 pardoned Thursday received no prison or jail time, instead getting probation or a reduction in their military pension. The longest sentence was nine years, for aiding cocaine distribution, followed by a six-year term for conspiracy to possess marijuana.

...

NO LIBBY: The list did not include former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, charged in the CIA leak case with perjury and obstruction.

2. Meanwhile Leonard Peltier still sits in prison
The presidential pardon is a joke anymore. How much longer is Leonard going to rot in prison for a crime he didn't commit.

3. Not pardoning Peltier
was, to me, Clinton's unforgivable sin.

4. That was the defining moment for me
I was there in DC for a big Free Leonard Peltier ralley. We met at the University, went to congress and beat the drums in Lafayette Park. All for nothing. I to can never forgive him for that one.

Nothing justifiable in pardoning him. The argument for is about as substantial as planet "x" theories.

7. If I was President, I'd let all pot offenders off, if that was all they did.
In the future, we will look at them like we look at bootleggers now.

"Grandpa was pot really against the law in th old days?"
