British troops seize Iraqi police chief
BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 1,000 British troops backed up by tanks have carried out a dawn raid to seize an Iraqi police chief accused of leading a death squad that slaughtered 17 police trainers.

~snip~

"The purpose of this raid is not just to apprehend this individual, but it is a precursor to disbanding the Serious Crimes Unit of the Basra police," he said by telephone from the restive southern city.

Burbridge said that British forces, with the support of Iraqi leaders, had found evidence that the unit was involved in "death squad activities" and had decided to wind it up, starting with Friday's raid.

Some of the seven detainees may be released after questioning, he said, but enough evidence was found to make a case against the group's leader, long a thorn in the side of the British presence in southern Iraq.

1. The War on Iraqi Sovereignty is going well.
Why don't the British forces simply get out of Basra? Huh?

2. Making the security forces in Basra ready for a handover.
I seriously doubt the British will finish the job as planned
by spring 2007.

3. In fact they appear to routinely act to guarantee that they cannot leave.
This bullshit has been going on for years now. It seems the Brits don't like the indigenous government so they keep killing it off.

4. You know... if people simply realized Bremer's idea bordered on
"absolutely fucking braindead" back in 2003 regarding removing from political power the Shaykhs, death squad leaders wouldn't be in charge of Iraqi police forces...
