UN Security Council imposes sanctions on Iran
Edited on Sat Dec-23-06 12:31 PM by Scurrilous
Security Council unanimously imposes sanctions on Iran's trade in sensitive nuclear materials and ballistic missiles, in move aimed at getting Tehran to halt uranium enrichment work; Israeli ambassador to UN: Very important decision

"The UN Security Council voted unanimously on Saturday to impose sanctions on Iran’s trade in sensitive nuclear materials and ballistic missiles, a move aimed at getting Tehran to halt uranium enrichment work.

“Today we are placing Iran in the small category of states under Security Council sanctions,” Acting US Ambassador Alejandro Wolff told the council before the 15-0 vote.

Israel's Ambassador to the UN Dan Gillerman told Ynet that "this is a very important decision.

According to Gillerman, who remained at his home during the vote, "Iran is joining the exclusive club of countries under the Security Council's sanctions. Russia and China's support allows for the first time to present a united international front that tells Iran – enough."

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, who was successful in watering down parts of the resolution, emphasized that the resolution did not permit any use of force."

2. Iran should do what Israel did and refuse to be part of IAEA
Iran has the right, under the Non-Proliferation treaty, to leave the treaty.

If it is good enough for Israel, then it is good enough for Iran.

The alternative is to impose nuclear disarmament in the Middle East, starting with nuke-rich Israel.

Take your pick: Nuclear Iran or disarm Israel from her nukes!

5. This isn't a casus belli, and shouldn't be misinterpreted as such
It's not nearly what the Bush and Olmert regimes were pushing for. For instance, it doesn't authorize any punative steps on Iran itself, nor does it authorize the boarding of Iranian flag vessels and aircraft, and similar potentially provocative measures.

9. UN imposes sanctions on Iran
http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2006/12/23/un-iran.html?ref=rss

Following two months of debate, the UN Security Council voted unanimously on Saturday to impose sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program.

The resolution — the latest version drafted on Friday by Britain, France and Germany — aims to stop Iran from enriching uranium, which could be used to build nuclear weapons.

<...>

Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, outlined his country's position before the crucial vote.

"Activities which are completely legal, valid and have nothing to do with the risk of non-proliferation can be conducted without any hindrance or interference."

11. If this doesn't sound like a newsdump....I'm not sure what is...
Saturday, the weekend of a major holiday...

The consumers are out consuming. Traffic, dinner and gifts are on the minds of most folks right now, not foreign relations.

By the return to the work week, which for many does not begin until after the new year, this will all be a distant memory down in internet cache history...

*sigh*

14. Enrichment of uranium is legal under NPT
In light of the Russian ambassador's statement I can't see what is Iran required to change.

and they want to frighten the American people with their new bogeyman in Iran as they did with Saddam.
