Car bomb kills at least 5, wounds 8 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Dec 25 (Reuters) - A car bomb killed at least five people and wounded eight when it exploded on a busy commercial street in a mainly Shi'ite district of Baghdad, police said.

The bomb, triggered by remote control, targeted shoppers on the main street of the New Baghdad district, a police source said.

Insurgents have often targeted Shi'ite strongholds in central Iraq with bombings as part of a wider sectarian conflict that threatens to spark all-out civil war and undermine a Shi'ite-led government of national unity.

3. Dozens more bodies found in Baghdad Monday

BAGHDAD (CNN) -- Iraqi police found 40 bullet-riddled bodies in various places in the capital Monday, an Interior Ministry official said.

Most of the bodies, none of which has been identified, exhibited signs of torture; their hands were tied and they were blindfolded.

At 7 p.m. Monday, mortar rounds exploded in the predominantly Shiite Kadhimiya neighborhood in Baghdad, killing two people and wounding one. (Posted 1:43 p.m.)
