TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran has said that it would be prepared to use "any weapon" in the standoff over its nuclear programme but assured world markets it had no intention of cutting off its oil exports.
"The country will use any weapon if neccessary to defend itself," Oil Minister Kazem Vaziri Hamaneh was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency following the UN Security Council's imposition of sanctions against Tehran.
"But other countries should not be concerned about Iran cutting off its oil exports to the world market since we are currently signing new deals and there are also ongoing transactions," he added on Tuesday.
Iran is the world's fourth largest oil producer and the second largest in the OPEC cartel.

"Iran has been under different sanctions for years and many companies have not been able to cooperate with our country for fear of US pressures," Vaziri Hamaneh said, according to the semi-official news agency Fars on Tuesday.
"They even do not easily deliver some dual-purpose equipment that we had previously bought. They cause trouble for us under different pretexts," he said.
"Foreign banks have been refusing to cooperate in the field of investment and financing," he said, adding that in response Iran has put its focus on domestic sources to replace foreign companies.
Several key negotiations on multi-billion dollar oil and gas contracts with European, Indian and Chinese companies have not reached any conclusion in the past year.
