Strong quakes jolts Taiwan 6.7
Edited on Tue Dec-26-06 08:42 AM by maddezmom
TAIPEI (AFP) - An undersea earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 has rocked Taiwan, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The tremor struck Tuesday at 20:26 pm (1226 GMT) with its epicenter 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of Hengchun in the southernmost tip of Taiwan. It originated 22 kilometers under the sea.

Taiwan, which lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, is regularly shaken by earthquakes. The country's worst, a 7.6-magnitude quake, killed some 2,400 people in September 1999

Tsunami aims at Philippines after quake
TAIPEI, Taiwan - A powerful quake struck off southwestern Taiwan on Tuesday, triggering a potentially destructive tsunami that was headed toward the Philippines on the second anniversary of the deadly waves that killed thousands in south Asia.

The quake, with a magnitude of between 6.7 and 7.2, was felt throughout Taiwan, Japan's Meteorological Bureau said. It swayed buildings and knocked objects off the shelves in the capital, Taipei.

The bureau said the 3-foot-high tsunami was expected to hit Basco in the Philippines.

"There is a possibility of a destructive local tsunami," the bureau said.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said the quake measured magnitude 6.7, while the U.S. Geological Survey and Japanese bureau put it at magnitude 7.2.

12. No Typo...
A wave at sea is usually smaller than a wave when it hits land. I suspect it could have been anywhere from 10-30 feet.

14. You're right, a tsunami is much smaller before it approaches land
A tsunami is actually a series of waves. The height of a tsunami wave in open water is often less than one metre, and the height is spread over the wavelength of the tsunami which is multiple kilometres. This usually makes a tsunami unnoticeable to people in boats while it is in deep water.

But when we are warned that a tsunami might be approaching, the predicted wave height does not refer to its state while it is in deep ocean. These warnings refer to the height of the wave when it reaches shore.

11. Tsunami danger over following earthquake
TAIPEI, Taiwan - A powerful earthquake struck off southwestern Taiwan on Tuesday, prompting fears of a potentially destructive tsunami on the second anniversary of the quake and deadly waves that killed thousands in south Asia.

An official at Japan's Meteorological Agency said there was no longer any danger of a destructive tsunami headed for the Philippines, as had been predicted.

"The expected waves did not materialize," said Hiroshi Koide of the agency's earthquake section. "The danger has passed."

The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of between 6.7 and 7.2, was felt throughout Taiwan. It collapsed two homes in the southern city of Pingtung, trapping six people, ETTV cable news reported. The quake also triggered fires and gas leaks, the station said.

13. Reuters: Taiwan quake kills two, undersea cables damaged
Taiwan quake kills two, undersea cables damaged

Source: Reuters

TAIPEI, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Two people were killed and 42 injured when three buildings
collapsed in earthquakes that shook southern Taiwan, authorities said on Wednesday.

The two dead were caught in the collapse of a furniture factory in the southern city
of Hengchun, where eight people, including four children, were trapped for a time,
the National Fire Agency said in a statement.

While a tsunami warning came to nothing, the quake damaged at least six undersea
telecommunication cables, affecting users in Taiwan and South Korea, and was felt in
China and Hong Kong.
