Canada throws out 'Russian spy'
Canada has deported a man accused of assuming a false identity over a 10-year period to spy for Russia.

The man, who took the name Paul William Hampel, left Canada on Tuesday morning following an earlier deportation order.

Canada's intelligence agency said in court papers it believed the man to be part of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, the successor to the KGB.

The man had been arrested trying to leave through Montreal airport on 14 November with a fake birth certificate.

2. Uh, hello!? What does this have to do with the right wing!?!
If this man really was a non-official cover spy for the successor to the KGB, what the hell is right or left wing about expelling or not expelling a spy?

3. Because
if anyone posts anything at all on DU it must be codified as being either right or left. No exceptions. At least that seem to be the prevailing attitude.

5. No, I wasn't disagreeing with you
Any governemnt, liberal, conservative, democratic, fascist, ogliarchcy or theocracy would kick a spy out.

I was simply pointing out the prevailing DU attitude that every issue must revolve around liberal/conservative and that every issue can be pigeonholed as red/blue.

9. Sad to say it, but
Sometimes DU really is the other side of the coin that FR's on.

And that coin is America(n Politics).

Canada kicks out alleged Russian spy
Last Updated: Tuesday, December 26, 2006 | 5:02 PM ET
CBC News

An alleged Russian spy who used the name Paul William Hampel has been sent to Russia, Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day said Tuesday.

Hampel was arrested in Montreal on Nov. 14, and a Federal Court judge issued a formal removal order against him on Dec. 4.

When arrested, he was allegedly carrying a false Ontario birth certificate and Canadian passport, as well as thousands of dollars in five different currencies, say authorities.

He has admitted to living in Canada under a false name.

7. That's it? They throw him out? For ten years of spying?
What if he decides to come back? Maybe a ten minute time out this time?

8. So you're suggesting a bullet to the head?
Canada's not into that, plain and simple.

10. They were lampooning their own security services on Canadian TV
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 10:40 AM by Bruce McAuley
"This Hour Has 22 Minutes" a couple weeks ago lampooned the fact a Russian spy would be so stupid as to get caught by the Canadian Security services.
They know how to laugh at themselves first of all, that's what I love about CBC TV and Canadians in general.
