AP Poll: Bush both a villain and a hero

AP Poll: Bush both a villain and a hero
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Bad guy of 2006: President Bush. Good guy of 2006: President Bush. When people were asked in an AP-AOL News poll to name the villains and heroes of the year, Bush topped both lists, in a sign of these polarized times.

Among entertainment celebrities, Oprah Winfrey edged out Michael J. Fox as the best celebrity role model while Britney Spears outdistanced Paris Hilton as the worst.

Bush won the villain sweepstakes by a landslide, with one in four respondents putting him at the top of that bad-guy list. When people were asked to name the candidate for villain that first came to mind, Bush far outdistanced even Osama bin Laden, the terrorist leader in hiding; and former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who is scheduled for execution.

The president was picked as hero of the year by a much smaller margin. In the poll, 13 percent named him as their favorite while 6 percent cited the troops in Iraq.

1. Is there anyone who has ever been as polarizing?
It really borders on Osama-level fundy islam love vs. American hate.

The people I talk to who like Bush just love him. Big old fat love too. Huge. He's one of the best presidents ever. You can't really have a rational argument. They talk about supporting the troops and hating Saddam and how 9/11 blah blah.

And those who hate Bush, complete opposite.

I can't think of anyone ever (not even just in my lifetime) who is as polarizing for such a large % of the US population

10. Nobody I can think of. And I can remember Nixon.
I suppose only Senator Joe McCarthy would come as close, but I was way too young to remember him. I'm convinced the only reason why we don't have rioting and marching in the streets over bush's war the way we did during Vietnam is because there was a draft back then. If we had one today, MAN would we see mobilization!

2. Those who "support the troops" can't support them with votes?
They vote for Bush over our troops? (13% vs 6%)

Makes sense, because when they voted for Bush in '04, they were waving a middle finger at our troops.

5. Why and how?
Can anybody explain why or how anyone would consider such an empty headed, vapid, un-self-responsible failure of a cretin a 'hero'?

Hey-soos-a-Chreesto, no wonder this country is so fucked.

14. "polarization"
is simply the Bush supporters are besieged around their hero. Good people have no representative single hero but many many decent heroes all infinitely superior to the one held by the deluded. The sane majority is saying what it thinks of the Bush and his nutwork in the framework of a sidelong question. This AOL type of opinion analysis is screwy as well, but we are supposed to take it seriously so that we start sounding like their talking points. All angles and curves and no straight lines.

9. With respect to those voting for bush, 66% versus 33%. the stupid 30% number just keeps rearing
its ugly head. Imagine an IQ bell curve...

33% are at 90 or lower.

8. I have always found him repulsive
My husband and I just got back from getting a prescription filled, and while waiting, I turned every magazine that had his ugly face on it to the back.

11. He's a hero to the wealthiest 2%
They've got to love a guy who steals from the poor to give to the rich.

15. I don't know if he is even a hero
to them, I can't see Gates, Trump or Ted Turner calling him a "hero". I would really like to know by name who those 13% are.

12. Big Brother was a hero to Winston Smith after he was sufficiently brainwashed
And those that think that Bush is a hero are every bit as brainwashed. As a previous poster noted, there is no rational discussion with these Bush cheerleaders.

I don't know that anything less than electroshock therapy could get their minds right.

13. Remember that this wasn't necessarily a political question either
That many Americans when polled thought of Bush's name when asked who they'd pick as the villain of 2006. Most Americans aren't politically minded. To me this speaks volumes of the state of our country.
