Stockton Soldier Dies in Iraq

21 year-old Stockton, California soldier takes his own life:

The Pentagon says 21-year-old Spc. Michael J. Crutchfield of Stockton died of non-combat related injuries December 23 in Balud, Iraq.

Crutchfield was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment based at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.

The Department of Defense says Crutchfield's death is under investigation.


He was a foster kid - his family and friends are on local television - salt of the earth folks...

My heart is aching. I saw his young wife on the tube, so young, so stalwart, so strong. A photo of him in uniform, lean and proud and full of hope for the future.

They'll probably deny his wife's application for benefits.

Loved ones told KCRA 3 Thursday night that Crutchfield likely committed suicide.

His foster brother and best friend Johnny Sotello received a suicide note in his e-mail from Crutchfield that said he believed his life was no longer worth living and he wanted to end his pain.
