updates to follow

CNN is reporting from Reuters that the US has handed him over to the Iraqi Government.

CNN is also reporting that Iraqi judges have said that he will be executed by Saturday, before the beginning of the holy period that will begin on Sunday.

AP story

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- An Iraqi judge says Saddam Hussein will be executed by Saturday at the latest.
Dec 29, 11:52 AM EST/ 7:52PM Iraqi local time

The Sunni holiday begins in earnest on Saturday afternoon before dusk. That would give less than 20 hours from noon on Friday EST

additional edit:
AP reports: Iraqi judges say Hussein to be executed "today or tomorrow".
CNN: Hussein's defense team told not to bother coming into Baghdad. The Iraqi PM has said "No delay in execution"

CNN's Arwa Damon is on the street in Baghdad where locals have commented that they are awaiting the news of the execution.
Also, The Iraqi law says that someone cannot be executed on "their" holy days. For Saddam, it starts Saturday, Sunday for others. {does this give us a 3 hour window?}

might get flamed but I believe it, so I will take my chances.

We need to keep Saddam alive. This is one of the only evil bastards that can run that country. He knows all the players and we need him alive just for the intelligence material he can offer us.

Of course Bush wants his Christmas present, while he holds Saddam's gun, to watch this live on some web cam. This grown man reminds me of a child.

On the other hand if the * regime insists on this type of justice for Saddam I must assume that * would think it fair treatment for himself should the American justice system deem it necessary.

No date set for Saddam hanging -aide to Iraqi PM
29 Dec 2006 16:31:45 GMT
Source: Reuters

BAGHDAD, Dec 29 (Reuters) - The Iraqi government is still discussing the legal
procedures necessary to execute Saddam Hussein and nothing has been decided
about the timing, an aide to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Friday.

U.S.-backed Iraqi television channel Al Hurra quoted Iraqi sources as saying
Saddam would either be hanged within hours on Friday or the execution would
be put off until after a week-long religious holiday.

The aide to Maliki, who declined to be identified, said the government was still
divided on the issue of whether a presidential decree was required before the
hanging.

A source in the prosecution, which according to the penal code must have a
representative at an execution, told Reuters he was unaware of any plans for an
imminent execution.

16. Reuters has updated their story
US hands Saddam to Iraqis for execution -lawyer
BAGHDAD, Dec 29 (Reuters) - U.S. officials on Friday handed over Saddam Hussein to Iraqi authorities for execution, his chief lawyer said, but conflicting accounts swirled over whether the ousted president would be hanged within hours.

Senior Iraqi officials, including two cabinet ministers, the Justice Ministry which is responsible for executions, a court prosecutor and an aide to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, all denied comments from a U.S. official and reports in Iraqi media that Saddam could go to the gallows as early as Saturday.

But an Iraqi television channel quoted a judge saying he would die on Friday or Saturday and defence lawyer Khalil al- Dulaimi told Reuters: "The Americans have notified us that they have handed over the president to the Iraqi authorities.

"They told us the president is no longer under the authority of the American forces and they requested us not to go to Baghdad," added

Then Bush can say "Today a brutal dictator, Saddam Hussein, has been put to death."

That way the news cameras could pan to all of the Democrats who don't stand up and clap because of their opposition to the death penalty.

"Our respect for human rights requires us to execute him, and there will be no review or delay in carrying out the sentence," al-Maliki said.
"The Americans want him to be hanged respectfully," al-Nueimi said. If Saddam is humiliated publicly or his corpse ill-treated "that could cause an uprising and the Americans would be blamed," he said.
