Iraqi-Americans pray for Saddam's death
Iraqi-Americans pray for Saddam's death
By KRISTIN LONGLEY, Associated Press Writer

DEARBORN, Mich. - A group of Iraqi-Americans gathered late Friday at a mosque in anticipation of Saddam Hussein's execution, praying for the death of the former Iraqi dictator as drivers outside honked horns in celebration.

Dave Alwatan wore an Iraqi flag around his shoulders and flashed a peace sign to everyone he passed at the Karbalaa Islamic Educational Center in this suburb of Detroit, a city that has one of the nation's largest concentrations of people with roots in the Middle East.

"Peace," he said, grinning and laughing. "Now there will be peace for my family."

Alwatan, 32, said Saddam's forces tortured and killed relatives that were left behind when Alwatan left Iraq in 1991. He was among about 40 men who gathered at the Islamic center.

The center's director, Imam Husham Al-Husainy, said members prayed for Saddam's death. Outside, traffic slowed as people drove in circles around the mosque, honking horns.

1. Oh yeah, that's what religion is about...
Praying that someone suffers and dies.

Really sets an example of peace. NOT!

3. This moment is thick with irony
"The death of the Prophet's grandson shocked the Islamic world, especially those of the Shi'at Ali ("Party of Ali")--or Shia. For them, Hussain's fate was more than a quashed insurrection; it was a martyrdom. A myth developed around the defeat: sinless, infallible, realizing beforehand the fate that awaited him, Hussain marched to doom in Karbala, knowing that his death would expose the Ummayads' brutality and preserve forever the flame of pure Islam. As for the Kufan's cowardice and treachery, it became a source of perpetual shame--one for which many Shia seek to atone by wailing lamentations and beating themselves with whips, cudgels and swords."

Is history repeating itself, with Saddam Husein playing the role of Hussain?

4. Well, Mr. Alwatan, 32, please get your ass back to Iraq and stand
up for your country so that we can stand down, and take the 40 men who were gathered with you when you go!

I'm sick of seeing the reports of dead Americans whose lives were snuffed short to depose Saddam! I wasn't really happy to learn that my state with its poorly underfunded schools setting up voting centers so that expatriated Iraqi's could vote!

Go back to your country and grin and laugh there.

10. Exactly - it's easy to bullshit when you are hinding behind the border of America.
Why don't these "Iraq-Americans" shut up already.

Iraqi-Americans are not really Iraqis.

So it's their fault that Saddam killed their relatives and friends?

14. What are they going to do that Saddam killed their relatives and friends?
They can't do anything about the Iraqis getting killed by the Bush invasion and the civil war either.

Asking opinion of a Iraqi living in USA about the death of Saddam is pretty much waste your time.

13. Excuse me?
Did you actually wish death on people in a thread about how awful wishing death on people is? Unfucking believable.

19. Spare us your righteous indignation on death wishing.
IG may have thrown a few undeserving exiles into the pot, but his intent is clear. Whole lot of local "Challabi"s getting press today.

23. No I won't spare you. Sorry.
I have a pretty high tolerance level for hypocricy- As E.M. Forester once notable said: "Only hypocrites cannot forgive hypocricy". But this example of it is striking enough to point out. So indulge in your own righteous indignation about my comment noting the irony of wishing death on people in a thread condemning such, but don't expect me to shut up about it.
