By Darlene Superville, Associated Press Writer December 31, 2006

WASHINGTON --Another terrorist attack, a warmer planet, death and destruction from a natural disaster. These are among Americans' grim predictions for the United States in 2007...

Six in 10 people think the U.S. will be the victim of another terrorist attack next year, more than five years after the Sept. 11 assault on New York and Washington. An identical percentage think it is likely that bad guys will unleash a biological or nuclear weapon elsewhere in the world...

Seventy percent of Americans predict another major natural disaster within the United States and an equal percentage expect worsening global warming. Fewer than one-third of people, or 29 percent, think it is likely that the U.S. will withdraw its troops from Iraq...

--Slightly more than one-third, or 35 percent, of Americans predict the military draft will be reinstated...

1. Also in that story, and perhaps more frightening
_One in four, 25 percent, anticipates the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Sunshine and happiness is what I see for 2007.

Of course the GOP sees gloom and doom for 2007 - Investigations will start right away and the Congress will be required to put in 5-day workweeks!

Whippee-doo! Happy New Year, everybody!!

9. That pessimism was reflected in this last election cycle.
I'm not terribly surprised by this list if you want the truth. I think it was pretty evident that the people are less than optimistic about the way things are going given the shift in our national politics in this last election cycle.

I think the biggest surprise for me in all of this is the fact that the media is now TALKING about the national negative attitude rather than just parroting the White House talking points.

This recant announcement that "no terrorist attacks are expected on New Year's Eve" was a very real tipoff, IMO. They were so worried about people's fear that they had to ANNOUNCE there is nothing to worry about! THAT is really big change over their cynical manipulation of the "terra alert" color codes a couple of years ago--don't ya think?

Laura

Question for old time's sake: Is today a PLAID Alert or is it a Sparkly Alert since it is a holiday?

10. Then why don't more people...
...get off of the couch and do something about this crap?

Does everyone think that someone ELSE is going to take care of the problem?

This is a democracy. If we want it to survive, it requires participation.

Democracy is not a spectator sport. If the will of the people is focused
on buying more trinkets at Walmart--with the credit cards--then democracy
will lose every time.

Wake up, people!!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!

(note: This message is for me too. I need to do more)

Another major terror attack, is the only hope they have to win 2008.

The democratic Presidential victory will be so overwhelming, not even Diebold will be able to stop it.

They don't seem to ask people who the "bad guys" are that will unleash a new terror attack, do they?

How many people, again, think that 9-11 was an inside job?

How many people think Katrina was LIHOP?

28. What do you expect?
With good paying jobs with high wages/salaries and full benefits being either outsourced or simply ceasing to exist every week through outsourcing and cutbacks in company spending, more and more middle-class Americans are being thrust onto the steaming pile of shit that is the service industry. I recently worked a stocking job for a mere 8 dollars an hour. No benefits, swing shifts, and of course part-time status - I will never do it again. The work is border-line slave for the amount of money paid for the job.

Is this the "free-trade" economy that the pinheaded assholes in Washington see us in 20 years as being? If so then I'm seriously considering leaving this country. Who gives a fuck if I can buy a toothbrush for 50 cents less than if I wouldn't have outsourced the labor - I've probably put several dozen of my fellow countrymen out of work in order to hire some little Cambodian kids to do the same work in a sweatshop for a nickel a day.

These people behind this free-trade epidemic truly are making this country a more dreary and gloomy place to live in.

33. I am living now in the most optimistic country in the world!
Care to take a wild guess? According to the usually quoted "scientific" polls the answer is Vietnam! Pretty ironic when you stop to think about it. I am now living about half a block from the Ben Thanh traditional market, in the center of HCMC/Saigon, most of the time. ($300/month inc. utilities) I also live just north of San Francisco on my farm in Sonoma County.

For one thing the Vietnamese do not have an enemy inside or outside the country. Everyone loves and respects Vietnam and the amazing Vietnamese people. (Not counting the former SVNese in the USA, now dissidents, who flame discussion boards, fly the SVN flag and threaten visiting VNese pop stars.) Even the "war on drugs" doesn't include cannibus.

It is so sweet here, I love being here in HCMC/Saigon and enjoy visiting other beautiful places around the country such as Phu Quoc Island, Nha Trang, Vung Tau and Dalat. In the 30 months since I first came here, as a tourist, on my way to Bali, I have seen so many positive changes. Tangible improvements are underway and the residents can certainly see this happening better than I can.

This is one place where "Americans" are treated as friends. The US Dollar has even held it's own, until recently, as it did dip a teeny bit last week. The Vietnamese are gracious, gentle and gorgeous. The food is fabulous, especially the fruit, wholesome and clean. Be careful if you come for a visit, you might not want to leave...

The business opportunities here are everywhere. The types of expertise many of us have can be very useful here. Many professionals in the medical and dental fields come here, and to Cambodia, and they do truly miraculous feats, turning despair into hope. Heartwarming!

Come visit now though and beat the rush, which is surely coming. The change in attitude, the manifestly healthy population with very few overweight, the mellow people, insure a wonderful time. Check it out, ask others who have been here...
