CNN: Hussein buried in same cemetery as sons
Hussein buried in same cemetery as sons
December 31, 2006

TIKRIT, Iraq (CNN) -- About 100 mourners gathered at the flag-draped grave of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein who was buried Sunday in Awja, near Tikrit.

About 100 people, including the governor of Salaheddin, clerics, tribal leaders and relatives attended the event, which took place at 4 a.m. (0100 GMT).

Saddam Hussein's relatives, including sons Uday and Qusay, are buried in the same cemetery. His sons were killed in a firefight with U.S. forces in 2003.

Iraq's state-run television network, Al-Iraqiya, reported that the Iraqi government formally handed over Hussein's body to Sheikh Ali al-Nida, leader of the Bou Nasser tribe, and the governor of Salaheddin. It was transported by the U.S. military.

The body was then taken to Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, north of the capital, where members of the Bou Nasser tribe and clerics prayed over it, said a reporter for CNN who saw the body in Tikrit....

1. If this is the same place they were discussing yesterday...
The speaker said it would be the ultimate insult because Hussein hated the place!

2. More people showed up to mourn him than to tear down his statue in that fake ceremony
of course both were paltry totals, but it is indicative of something....

3. I thought they wanted to prevent his burial place from becoming a shrine
This is not a good way to accomplish such a thing.

AWJA, Iraq, Dec 31 (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein's extended family plans
to found a presidential library and religious school at his burial site in his
native village, a family member said on Sunday as mourners thronged
to pay their respects.

The former Iraqi president was hanged on Saturday for crimes against
humanity. His body was handed over to Sunni Arab tribal leaders from his
native Tikrit and buried in the dead of night in a domed, marble-floored
hall in the nearby village of Awja.

"We want to turn the place into a religious school and a library to honour
Saddam," said Muayed al-Hazaa, a relative who described himself as a
cousin of the ousted strongman.

In life, the 69-year-old Saddam was noted as a voracious reader, a habit he
continued during his three years in a U.S. military prison, where he also
wrote poetry and stories.

5. So in this biblical act of brutality
have we managed to eliminate the entire Hussein clan?
