Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 10:07 AM by maddezmom

BAGHDAD (CNN) -- A suicide car bomb parked at a busy commercial intersection in central Baghdad detonated on Thursday, killing at least 20 people and wounding 20 more, an Interior Ministry official said.

The incident -- which took place in Karrada -- occurred around 4:15 p.m. during a bustling shopping period at the start of the Muslim weekend and before the city's 8 p.m. curfew.

Police believe the bomber was targeting a police patrol. Two of those dead and three of those wounded were police.

The official warned that the casualty toll could go up.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A huge explosion rocked central Baghdad just be for sunset Thursday and a massive plume of black smoke was rising into the air along the east bank of the Tigris River.

The blast occurred shortly after two heavy mortar shells slammed into the heavily fortified Green Zone.

The public address system inside the zone, where the U.S. Embassy is located, could be heard warning in English that people should take cover, "this is not a drill."

Heavy gunfire rang out throughout the center of the city in the aftermath of the explosion, likely to have been a car rigged with explosives, thundered across the city and was especially heavy in the Karrada district. Sirens on emergency vehicles wailed through the region.

1. Wouldn't this be considered good news by "conservatives?"
More dead "ragheads." More death and destruction and chaos. Such sights should just warm the cockles of the life loving "christians" amongst us.

4. I've said it before, but I'll say it again.
Maliki needs to BAN cars from Baghdad. For as long as it takes to stop these vicious and inhuman attacks.

7. the insurgency would adapt
its all in Sun Tzu.

i like your thinking - but the objections are predictable - how do sunnis get through shia areas safely? how do college students get home without being kidnapped? how do iraqis get 50 lb. bags of flour home?

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide car bomber struck a predominantly Shiite neighborhood in central Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 26 people and wounding 54, police said. The blast occurred shortly after two rockets slammed into the heavily fortified Green Zone.

Two hours later a second huge explosion rocked the area. Police said they had blown up a second car bomb that had been disabled before its second suicide bomber could detonate the vehicle.

A massive plume of black smoke rose into the air on the east bank of the Tigris River and heavy gunfire rang out across the city center in the aftermath.

The suicide bomber struck in the central neighborhood of Karradah, the second bombing to strike the area in three days. At least three policemen were among the dead.

Angry Shiite residents took to the streets chanting "We want the Sunnis out!" There is a small Christian and Sunni population in that section of the city
