Bush, Pelosi plan joint news conference Saturday
Bush, Pelosi plan joint news conference Saturday
WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia (Reuters)

President George W. Bush is scheduled to hold a news conference on Saturday with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) after he addresses a meeting of House Democrats, congressional aides said on Friday.

Bush will speak to House of Representatives Democrats holding an annual weekend retreat at about 10 a.m. (1500 GMT). Afterward, at about 11:40 a.m. (1640 GMT), Bush, along with Pelosi and other House Democratic leaders, will answer reporters' questions.

Bush, a Republican, will be appearing at the Williamsburg retreat one month after Democrats took control of the House and Senate. With less than two years remaining in Bush's presidency, his policies, including his handling of the Iraq war, are being challenged by Democrats.

The unusual news conference comes as Republicans and Democrats have been stressing the need for more bipartisanship following years of tense relations between the two political parties.

7. How so? Pelosi will say 'jump', and he'll say 'how high'? I don't think so.
Makes me think she's 'making nice' when the time for that is done. I hope she proves me wrong.

12. Bush's idea of being bipartisan is to say: "Do it my way."
He's too petulant and immature to compromise.

14. "after he addresses a meeting of House Democrats."
He has never faced a crowd of dissenters before. Maybe he will discover he isn't the beloved decider after all.

15. Please! If it were only that easy. This guy is unbending to the detriment of us all.
My concern is about Pelosi; is she going to cave, or hopefully just be her charming self?

18. Uh, saying "Jump!" is NOT 'making nice.'
I've said it many times and not once was I making nice. (Interesting thing is that, during a power vacuum which is where the world is with the demotion of the USA to third world despotism, people will be waaay up in the air before they ever figure out I have no authority to say it. Nancy, however, does.)

"It's like, duh. Just when you thought there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between the two parties, the Republicans go and prove you're wrong."

10. Well,that's just what we need!
Bu$h and Pelosi becoming "bi-partisan" is NOT good for our party. Not with that insane jerk at the helm.I hate it when the Dems get all chummy with the repukes. We always end up being on the losing end.Every single time. :scared:

11. It's posturing for both....but it needs to be done by both sides.
Think of it as a set of divorced parents who are attending an important school event for their children.... It's a show of effort. Same thing.

:pals: Pelosis and *bush on the "image"

 If it does not occur. :scared:

16. Thanks, and you're right, liberalnurse. It might/should/could be done,
but I don't have to like it, especially when so much is at stake. I'm not a politician, just someone who cares about the outcome. I just don't want Pelosi to cave!

25. I disagree that it has to be done. b*s* is a criminal, and should be treated as such.

He should be shunned, not cajoled.

However, I agree entirely with your last sentence!

...murderous, compulsive liar ex.

b*s* is a big-time criminal, not some daddy who has to get along with mommy for the sake of the kids. You can't compare attending a PTA meeting with according a killer like b*s* any respect.

I reject your assertion that this has to be done. You're not speaking for me, that's for sure.

21. Fine. I want to see Pelosi tell the truth in front of Bush with cameras rolling.
I want to see her lay down the gauntlet on camera in front of Bush. I want REAL action.

Truthfully, Americans don't want to see bi-partisanship - they want to see LEADERSHIP.

Do NOT stand next to your political foe and shake hands, pretending like nothing is going on. A clear, overt and direct signal of disapproval is in order.

Personally, I think this is a bad idea. If it comes across as "amicable" (which is probably what will happen), then it only helps Bush. Democrats are already known as "amicable". We need strong handed, calm leadership.

Go Nancy! I want you to do it! We all want you to do it!

No freebies.

23. Nancy has already said Iraq is a Catastrophe....
So I assume she will tell him that his policy hasn't, isn't and won't work. Something like this "Mr. President you have refused to listen to the American people and so it is time that new leadership take action. Effective immediately all funding for the Iraq war is ended. We will pass a house resolution that indicates this within the hour. We will work with you to use discretionary funds to start a phased redeployment of our troops out of Iraq in a 4 month time table. We will of course continue to give Iraqi government full political and training support. The country will not wait one more day, not one more life for a lost cause. If things start going as bad as you say when we redeploy then we will ask the U.N. our allies and Iraq's neighbors to step up and handle the situation. This is not only the right decision for our national security it is the right decision for world peace.

30. At best this provides validation for Bush; at the worst it's Nancy
heading for the dark side. There are plenty of Republicans that one can work with, but Bush has proven countless times, that he is not one of them.
