Dean Does Not Waver on Iraq Criticism |WP
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 15 -- Former Vermont governor Howard Dean, facing renewed criticism from his Democratic rivals for opposing the war to oust Saddam Hussein, continued his assault on President Bush's Iraq policy Monday while outlining a multilateral strategy for fighting terrorism and a new Dean doctrine for using military force.

Nearly 24 hours after Hussein's capture was announced to the world, Dean used the third major foreign policy address of his campaign to defend his opposition to the war and to denounce Bush for "leading America in a radical and dangerous direction" and "badly" damaging U.S. alliances around the world with his policies in Iraq and elsewhere.

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll showed Dean ahead of his rivals nationally as well, favored by 20 percent of registered Democrats surveyed. Lieberman was second, at 12 percent, with no other candidate in double digits. Almost one-third of those surveyed said they were either undecided or liked none of the candidates. About two in 10 said Gore's endorsement made it more likely they would support Dean, while about one in 10 said the endorsement made it less likely.

1. When you're right, there's no need to waver.

5. Why the renewed attacks against Dean now?
By Democrats, that is.

Why do they feel that because we have caught Saddam that it is clear that Dean doesn't have a handle on this war thing? I don't get it. The capture of Saddam has nothing to do with what Dean believes (and most of us) was an illegal war that was rushed in to without the help of our allies or the consent of the world community. Is this just a last ditch, desperate effort by Kerry, Lieberman, and Gephardt to "get" Dean? Don't they know that most of us who will be voting in the primaries can't stand Bush or this war thing he has gotten us into? Don't they know that Democrats see through the charade that is this war, and that we don't think that Saddam's capture is going to solve anything? Don't they know that this type of attack will add more support to Dean and less to them? What is the endgame here?

It boggles my mind.

12. The drums pounding in their ears and the bright lights
of the news blitz bowled them over AGAIN. Really, they demonstrate time and time again, that they are not leaders but followers of the manufactured consenus of the moment. Then again, any reason to attack Dean will do.

9. Goddamn right.
When the wingnut gloating is over, it will still be true that Iraq was still never a threat, and the war was still immoral and illegal.

10. "Dean Doctrine"
"In a question period, Dean outlined what he called the "Dean doctrine" for appropriate military action: to defend the country, stop an "imminent" threat and intervene overseas when other nations refuse to halt genocide. The doctrine includes the right to unilateral, preemptive action."

Shows the extent to which Bush has managed to frame the debate.

Ugh.

American foreign policy except the genocide part. Our defense policy has never allowed an enemy to strike us first if the attack was imminent. If we knew the Japanese were going to attack Pearl Harbor do you think we would've just sat there until the first bomb hit us? Rediculous.
It all rests on the ability to prove the attack was imminent. There was no evidence what so ever that Iraq had any thing to do with September 11th or was going to attack us or anyone else.
But bush* gets on TV and says Iraq is a threat, the fourth estate abandons their duty and parrots the propoganda, most of our spineless elected Democratic leadership falls in line and voila! We become an aggressor nation. Starting wars for enrichment and empire.
The long downward spiral has begun in the name of conservative ideology.

11. *** Major Spin Alert! Major Spin Alert! ***
"Former Vermont governor Howard Dean, facing renewed criticism from his Democratic rivals for opposing the war to oust Saddam Hussein,..."

See how easy it is?
The whole war was a war against SADDAM HUSSEIN...
Dean was opposed to the war...
ergo
Dean is a Saddam Supporter!

Long Live King George! He's no wimpy Saddam-ite!

I'm gonna go puke now....

15. On the bright side
CNN International carried (most of) Dean's speech and for treated him, for all intents and purposes, as the Dem candidate. This treatment of Dean by CNN Inter is something I've NOT seen before.
