Taliban seize second district

Nato has confirmed to Al Jazeera that the Taliban has seized a second district
in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Qari Yousef, a Taliban spokesman, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that Taliban fighters
were holding captive 33 police officers after taking over Washir - a remote desert
area in the northwest of Helmand - the day before.

A spokeswoman for the Nato-led ISAF force told Al Jazeera: "I can confirm that
Washir district centre is in the hands of the Taliban."

She said the town would be brought back under government control but declined to
comment on any plans to do that.
