Hatch, Cannon come to Gonzales' defense
Utah's senior senator says there is no clear evidence the attorney general lied

WASHINGTON - Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. Chris Cannon of Utah defended U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Saturday after newly released documents showed Gonzales was in a meeting where he approved the firing of seven U.S. attorneys.

The revelation appeared to contradict Gonzales' earlier statements that he was not aware of the details of a plan to fire the prosecutors, and to support what Kyle Sampson, a Utah native who was Gonzales' chief of staff, has stated through his attorney: that many senior Justice Department officials were aware of the U.S. attorney discussions.

Hatch on Saturday defended Gonzales.

"In my long experience with Attorney General Gonzales, he has always been straightforward and honest with me," Hatch said. "So, unless there is clear evidence that the attorney general deliberately lied or misled Congress, I see no reason to call for his resignation."

Cannon also jumped to Gonzales' defense.

"The attorney general hasn't said he hasn't touched this. He has said he wasn't deeply involved," Cannon said on Fox News. "This is highly consistent with what the attorney general has said in the past."

1. Support from Hatch is clear evidence of guilt
Orrin Hatch wouldn't have had a "long experience" with Gonzales if Gonzales was "straightforward and honest" and nothing is "clear" to either of them, especially evidence.

3. These people are of the devil's party....
<snip>
Those who still stand in support of Gonzales, I think, know they are of "the devil's party." At this point I can think of no other reason for such devoted, unwaivering loyalty. These types of people know exactly what it is they support and they will always defend it.

By the way, should Chertoff replace Gonzales, the irony would be remarkable. His name - as I pointed out earlier - means "of the Devil" in Russian. <more>

4. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to "Shutyer" Hatch & "Loose" Cannon.
They are helping to keep this whole thing alive. If Gonzo simply resigned & slipped off under a rock somewhere, taking all the blame & carrying water one last time for the Shrubmeister, there is some chance that this whole juicy mess would blow over for them. So let us be thankful to these brave paragons of democracy, puffing and thumping away as they perform their version of CPR on the moribund body of the USA scandal.

5. Hatch Must Be Senile As Well As Deaf and Blind
Open your eyes, take your fingers out of your ears, and stop singing "La la la", Orrin!

6. This is for the benefit of the simple folk back home..
They have been challenged with conflicting evidence and they need reassurance. The poor fools that elect these two will never figure out that Hatch is an inveterate liar as well as the most partisan scum to ever dribble into congress and Cannon, nothing but a feckless dolt, mindlessly mouthing the words fed to him by his taskmasters. Don't worry GOP, whatever you do, no matter how base, criminal or out right evil, the 'good' people in Utah will always be there to support you.
