Cheney assures early Iraq pullout won't be allowed

by Maxim Kniazkov Sun Mar 25, 4:36 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Vice President Dick Cheney has assured political allies that an early withdrawal of US forces from Iraq would not be allowed, despite efforts by Congress to impose a deadline on US combat operations there.

The comments late Saturday followed a historic vote Friday in the House of Representatives, which called for a pullout of US combat troops from Iraq by August 31, 2008 -- regardless of whether Iraqi security forces are ready to take over from them.

President George W. Bush has vowed to veto the measure. But the threat has called into question the future of a 124-billion-dollar emergency funding bill, to which it is attached.

Lacking line-item veto power, Bush can reject bills only in their entirety.

41. How can anyone take Cheney seriously?
How can anyone take Cheney seriously?

He makes money off the war, and he doesn't know the difference between friend and bird. Plus, when he had the chance to fight during Vietnam, he decided to stay home and make money. I guess that's what real patriotism is, telling others to go to war while you make money.

Maybe the two million people who are about to lose their houses to foreclosure during this booming economy can go in the military since they have no where to live.

It makes me sick that a guy who wouldn't serve in the military tells other people that they don't support the military. The rich, like Cheney, don't care about the military; they care about money. It's always money.

5. Quoting extensively from Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the vice

.He did not explain what steps the administration could take if the supplemental bill dies in partisan bickering. But he expressed confidence in the final outcome, stating "We will complete the mission, and we will prevail."

Quoting extensively from Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the vice president reiterated his conviction that an US early withdrawal from Iraq would be "a complete validation of the Al-Qaeda strategy."

And he painted a dire picture of the Muslim world descending into chaos and tyranny, if radical Islamists were allowed to prevail.

"Having tasted victory in Iraq, jihadists would look for new missions," he predicted. "Many would head for Afghanistan and fight alongside the Taliban. Others would set out for capitals across the Middle East, spreading more sorrow and discord as they eliminate dissenters and work to undermine moderate governments."

9. "new wrinkle on Sunday" The fear, Brzezinski argued, was also being exploited by so-called "terror

.......The speech (by Cheney) marked a ratcheting up of a tense standoff between the White House and Democratic-controlled Congress, which is under heavy pressure from constituents to find a way to wrap up the war that most Americans now believe was a mistake.

But the Democrats made clear they have no intention of backing down. In a radio address Saturday, Representative Paul Hodes (news, bio, voting record) said the era of blank checks issued by Congress to the president was over and urged Bush to respond "by listening to the American people."

The angry debate added a new wrinkle Sunday, when a leading US foreign policy expert, former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, delivered a stinging rebuke to the whole concept of the war on terror, arguing it was promoting "a culture of fear" that was being exploited for political and financial gain.

"The sense of a pervasive but otherwise imprecise danger was thus channeled in a politically expedient direction by the mobilizing appeal of being 'at war'," he wrote in The Washington Post.

The fear, Brzezinski argued, was also being exploited by so-called "terror entrepreneurs."

16. Gee, Dick, then maybe you shouldn't have invaded in the first place
Or maybe you should have lied and linked Iraq and OBL

Or maybe you should have had a plan

Or maybe you should have had more troops

Or maybe you chould have had competent leadership instead of idealogues

Or maybe all of the above, what say?

39. "Having tasted victory in Iraq, JIHADISTS would look for new missions." WTF?
Jihadists??? I thought WE were winning in Iraq. Or, more recently, as President Chucklenuts claimed, we COULD win.

I know we're all losing, but who the Hell is winning, Dick? And could you guys keep your stories straight for more than 72 hours?

6. Of course he won't allow it.
This has been his project from the get-go. He's been the decider all along. Our functionally retarded circus chimp in the White House couldn't cook this disaster up in a million years--he just signed at the bottom line grinning like a feeble minded hillbilly about being a war president and one upping Daddy.

12. Exactly. We need our own Nuremberg trials
to solve the entire criminal enterprise that the reTHUGlic party has devolved into. Mandatory life imprisonment in Gitmo, subjected to the same 'humane' treatment that the victims of the Afghan warlords (were the Busheviks stupid enough to think that bounties would help Afghan war lords round up truly dangerous Talibs? - Jeez!) received. Perhaps a life sentence in a chain link cage would be too good for the reTHUGlics, but I don't want to put 'em to death - make them suffer in 8 x 10 cages, with Internet cameras showing the 'roughhousing' they deserve.

24. The Press fosters the idea that there is something mysterious about Cheney
when all he is a bully - no different than Bush in that regard and like Bush, Cheney doesn't feel he has to answer for his actions either.

Cheney is missing so often because he is off doing business deals using his office to accomplish them
and I wouldn't doubt that Cheney himself has visited the secret prisons - gleefully telling himself it's a good thing.
