Soldiers headed to Iraq as part of a 21,500-troop increase are receiving the training and equipment they need for the mission, Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson said Tuesday after a morning visit to Fort Riley, Kan.
The trip was motivated by concerns that soldiers were being rushed to duty without enough preparation or proper training, Nelson said.
But at Fort Riley, where the Army trains units headed for combat duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, Nelson said he found the troops well-prepared and well-outfitted.
"I can say without any reservations, from my briefings and my first-hand meetings with soldiers and their spouses, that training seems to be adequate and the equipping is going on as scheduled," Nelson said after his return to the Millard Airport.
