Bush veto puts new pressure on Democrats

By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer 40 minutes ago

WASHINGTON -.................

The party's most liberal members, especially in the House, say they will vote against money for continuing the war if there's no binding language on troop drawdowns. Bush and almost all congressional Republicans continue to insist on a spending bill with no strings attached on troop movements.

..................
The standoff gives Republicans leverage, because even with the liberals' votes, Democrats don't have enough support to override Bush's veto. It will force Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., to seek more Republican help in drafting a new bill that Bush might accept, her allies and opponents say.

"I think the Democrats are in a box," Rep. Eric Cantor (news, bio, voting record), R-Va., said in an interview Tuesday. "We're pretty resolute on our side. We are not going to tie this funding to any type of withdrawal deadline or any type of redeployment deadline."
...........
The situation frustrates Democrats, who won control of the House and Senate in an election that largely focused on Iraq...........

2. Hello AP? Bush just vetoed a bill that FULLY FUNDED our toops
All b/c he doesn't want himself held accountable.

It seems to me He is the one in a box, with his failure to fund our toops.

3. That's the way I see it as well.
Bush is the one sacrificing the safety and security of our troops.

He did so by putting them in harm's way in the first place, and now he is placing them at higher risk by keeping them there, and doing away with their funding.

I think the Dems should just say, "No more funding legislation is forthcoming, Mr. Bush. Bring the troops home now."

6. The Dems should just say "Oh well," and move along

to the next order of business WITHOUT LOOKING BACK.

Another funding bill? Uh, sorry, Mr.Precedent, you didn't want to fund the troops, or save Katrina victims. We get it. That was our ONLY bill.

Move along.
What's Mr. Precedent gonna do then? Write the bill himself?
I don't think so. Congress controls the purse.

Edited to add:
Next order of business should be IMPEACHMENT of this cabal

7. I agree...
It was, afterall, a supplemental spending bill, not part of the budget.
There's no law that says Congress has to pass a supplemental spending bill.
They can just move on and see what happens.

Who said a while back, "work with what you've got"? He was talking about the lack of equipment for our toops.

9. "Bush vetoes bill to support troops and end war"
Just repeat that over and over and over. that would relieve any pressure.
