Veto makes Democrats weigh concessions

By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer 13 minutes ago

WASHINGTON -
President Bush showed little appetite for compromise Wednesday, hours ahead of a session with congressional leaders aimed at crafting a new bill to fund the war in
Iraq.

Fresh from his Tuesday night veto of spending legislation that set timelines for U.S. troop withdrawals, Bush stuck firmly to his demands on what a follow up bill should look like. The Democrats who control of Capitol Hill, and their Republican counterparts, were due at the White House Wednesday afternoon for discussions with the president, just after a planned attempt in the House — sure to fail — to override Bush's veto.

The 1 p.m. EST vote was primarily procedural, as Democrats lacked the two-thirds majority needed to override the veto.

2. Just because the MSM write it, doesn't mean it's true
Not that Dems in Congress haven't disappointed us in the past, but I won't believe anything in the press until I see the actual bill.

3. The only concession they should ever make on this
is stripping the bill of all its riders and sending Stupid a clean bill, short term funding plus a timetable for troop withdrawal.

Let the little shit veto that.

19. Didn't you know? Bushwad has a mandate!
The only mandate Bushwad has is for him to leave office NOW.

Pelosi and Reid should tell Bush he is a liar.

They should tell him he doesn't have the full faith and support of the American people.

Just for spite they should tell him that his parents think he is an imbecile. And just to make sure he understands they should tell him the definition of someone being an imbecile is someone stupid.

Let the President keep explaining his veto of Troop Funding.

6. The irony, of course, is that the accusation of surrender
becomes true if the Dems compromise on this bill! They are being accused of "surrendering" by having signed the bill, and paradoxically, are being pressured to "surrender" to Bush's will.

In one case the surrender is real, and they'd better figure out which one that is and act accordingly!!

7. strip it of everything but add a War Tax
insist that we need to pay as we go. If we can't get the fat cats attention by threatening a draft, then threaten their pocketbooks.

levy it on:
Companies profiting from the war (halliburton, Blackwell, et al)
Companies standing to gain from the war (oil)
and roll back the tax cuts.

Insist on collecting it before releasing it for spending.

If he vetoes that he is disingenuous beyond all comprehension

And if it gets through, we can expect a much faster withdrawal than anything we can mandate.

8. BINGO ...

The Dems should do an veto override vote. Then when that fails, strip the timetables and add War taxes on the top tax bracket for as long as US forces are stationed in Iraq.

9. All of the news channels are discussing
Edited on Wed May-02-07 12:04 PM by Zodiak Ironfist
how the Dems (Pelosi and Reid, specifically) are talking about taking out the withdrawal date and putting in benchmarks for the Iraqi government to meet and sending that to Bush. One day and already the Dems have capitulated.

Two things are predictable...Republicans stick to their guns and mainstream Democrats do not. I am so sick of this moebus strip that always results in more fascism, more death, and more misery for Americans of this and future generations.

I hope I'm wrong.

10. What am I missing?
Why don't the democrats just take their ball and go home? Why don't they claim that the bill they submitted was the best compromise that was going to happen? By vetoing the bill to fund the war, Bush effectively ended the war. What could be better than that? Why screw it up by offering another funding bill?

11. Bush to meet Congress over Iraq
Source: BBC

US President George W Bush is to meet top Democrats to try to find a way to fund US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It comes a day after he vetoed a Congressional bill that would have linked war funding to a timetable for withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

Signing the veto, Mr Bush said setting a deadline for withdrawal would be "setting a date for failure" in Iraq.

Each side has urged compromise on the issue, with talk turning to setting "benchmarks" for Iraqi leaders to meet.

14. They will cave...
The Dems are too divided to agree on a single strategy. I feel bad for Pelosi. With the DINOs on one side and the Out-of-Iraq coalition on the other...she can't win.

21. If they are divided there won't be a bill. Awwwww
Which means no funding for the war.

Question is what bill will they be able to garner the necessary votes.

They are instead divided on how to get the Bush to change his policy.

24. As I write this,
I'm seeing an ad to my left for John Edwards urging that the Democratic Congress keep sending the "commander guy" the same time table over and over. A good idea, but I have little confidence it will be adopted.
