House Fails to Override Bush on Iraq
Source: Excite.com Homepage

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Democratic-controlled House failed Wednesday to override President Bush's veto of an Iraqi war spending bill with timetables for troop withdrawals.

The 222-203 vote, far short of the two-thirds majority needed for a veto override, occurred just ahead of a White House meeting that Bush called to begin compromise talks with congressional leaders of both parties on new legislation to finance the war, now in its fifth year.

"The president has turned a tin ear to the wishes of the American people," Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said during the hour-long debate before the vote. "The president wants a blank check. The Congress will not give it to him."

But Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., urged his colleagues to sustain the veto, saying politicians should not make military decisions.<snip>

Politicians should not make military decisions, so I suggest you take your happy ass over to the WH and tell George to STFU!!

3. Jerry Lewis, who owes his current freedom to BushCo's DOJ?
THAT Jerry Lewis? I bet he'd stand on his head and squawk like a duck if they told him to.

4. It appears that everything is going according to plan.
I just wish I knew the Democrats plan. The Republican plan is to dig in as usual and not give an inch.

12. The Democrats plan is to get us out of this godforsaken illegal war.
The Republican plan is to support the President and kill their Party in 2008.

7. It's not a military decision asshole...
...it's a financing decision.

A military decision would be another "Operation" to subdue the insurgency. "Operation: Bloated Camel" or whatever lame ass name they come up with. As far as I know...congress has not come up with any new "operations" for the military to under take.

8. If politicians shouldn't make military decisions ...
... why was a vote ever held for the IWR to begin with?

Anyone who was paying attention knew that vote was a go-ahead ticket for bush's war. I don't care how they dressed it up in silk and lipstick, it was a huge snorting pig.

10. Unfortunately...
This was very predictable. Now it's gonna go into a compromise phase, but will the Democrats be doing all of the compromising because Bush knows they don't have a chance of over-riding any veto.

11. What was the point?
If the Dems aren't going to frame this as "The President is vetoing funding for the troops" then what is the point of this? If this isn't going to be spun the right way then it's waste of all of our time.

18. There's no need for any compromises.
The funding bill failed. Congress need take no more action. Or, if there is a felt need, pass the same thing again. Even better -- tighten it up: I'd like to see a mandatory timeline, calling for full withdrawal from Iraq by the end of the summer (or sooner, if that is feasible).

13. The People Have Spoken and Bush Sent Them "To Their Room"
We have a volunteer army. How about volunteer funding? Let the folks who want to keep the meter running on this war start to feed it with their own coins. I tell the Dems its not the time to "cut and run" from the will of the people. Just go about your other business.

14. The numbers don't add up -
- aren't there 233 Democrats in the house? The 201 Republicans and 2 Independents in the house look like the 203 vote. But we're missing 11 Democrats in the vote, aren't we?

Any way to find out who didn't vote?

17. Well, that's it, then.
Congress should now turn to some other concern. Funding for the Iraq War has failed passage, so deal with some other issue.

;-)

20. Second verse, same as the first. Combat Mad King George with 'enry the 8th.
Only this time, 75% less funding, three months less to get out of Iraq.

22. Oh, I like that. Wish it were possible.
But democracy is still slow. People's opinions change gradually, and the steady erosion of every good thing will finally bring it to an end.

We do not have infinite resources. We do not have an infinite army. George proposes to waste them all on this. And he will. But then it will be over.

Then we will have to deal with what's left.

21. Tell Bush-boy to take up a collection.
Let those who support the war ante up or pound salt. All those opposed to this sham can just sit back and let the money run out. Then, the only option is to bring American troops home to defend American soil. The chickenhawk supporters can be sent over as replacements if they want to continue to defend foreign oil.
