Nelson to help craft new war bill
BY JAKE THOMPSON
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Sen. Ben Nelson will meet White House officials today to discuss a new Iraq war spending bill after President Bush vetoed the first one Congress sent him.

Nelson, D-Neb., said he, too, opposes the first bill's troop withdrawal timelines, which prompted the president's veto.

As a past Bush ally on tax cuts and homeland security legislation, Nelson said he hopes to help develop a new war spending bill that would put pressure on the Iraqi government and be "something the White House finds acceptable."

His comments came as verbal skirmishing continued between the Republican president and the Democrats who control Congress.

4. I would hope it is more like Good cop - Bad cop
With the help of Bill Nelson, the Democrats can get a compromise bill through that puts bush back on his heels. After we get him going back-wards, we can roll right over him.
With this Veto, bush has effectively been stopped. Now we need to turn it around and lead this country out of this war with bush along for the ride.

13. Bill Nelson? Do you mean Ben?
As a Fl resident, I certainly hope Bill is not involved with this.

10. Fuck him. Typical lack of unity from our party.
On the other hand, unacceptable bills won't pass in congress, which would result in my Option One: don't fund this criminal enterprise.

12. Nelson's all right. He went along with the supplemental
even though he is against timetables--he helped give Dems that little victory against his own instincts, so give him a break. He's not a Lieberman, at least. Lieberman would be held up as a saint here in Nebraska.

14. Nelson has some of the highest approval ratings in the senate
from NE overall, but especially from NE Dems.

I agree with the guy on very few things, but I highly doubt that NE will elect a real progressive anytime soon.

16. Yes. Survey USA polls
Survey USA did monthly polls that showed him as one of the top rated senators. And again, Dems in NE were giving him the highest ratings of any group of people. Unfortunately, SUSA's polls are harder to dig through nowadays, and I haven't seen a NE poll in awhile. A quick google yeilded this:

"Nebraska’s Ben Nelson Highest Rated U.S. Senator, According to SurveyUSA April 2006 50-State Data"
http://www.surveyusa.com/press2.html

Yes it is old, but his numbers are pretty consistent.
