AUGUSTA, Maine -- A Greene company is voluntarily recalling nearly a ton of beef, the Maine Department of Agriculture announced Thursday.

About 1,900 pounds of beef from Bubier Meats may be contaminated with fecal material and other contaminants, officials said. The problem was discovered through an FDA verification process and observations performed on April 30 and May 1.

The recalled meat include two sides of beef, 45 bags labeled "Hamburg," 30 bags of ground beef labeled "Caldwell Farms Beef All Natural Beef," and 450 pounds of beef cuts labeled "Caldwell Farms All Natural Beef."

Some of the labels on the meat bear the establishment number EST. 4. Bubier did not date or lot code these products.

1. Bubier Meats sounds too much like buboes to me. Yummy.
A bubo is a swelling of the lymph nodes, found in an infection such as bubonic plague, gonorrhea, tuberculosis or syphilis. According to historical records they were also characteristic of the pandemic responsible for the Black Death and perhaps other ancient pandemics. It usually appears under the armpit, in the groin or on the neck. Many doctors believed that bursting them was the answer, although in the view of modern medicine this treatment is useless or in fact harmful. There are reports of people using hen feathers in order to burst lymph nodes. When lymph nodes are burst, the puncture site can leave a patient at higher risk for dangerous infection.

2. What are the odds of the FDA finding any contamination
They test less than one percent of all meat. It makes one wonder how bad the processing has to be for the contamination test to come up positive.

Either the meat processor is a very dirty processor or is just very very unlucky.
