Gunmen assassinate official of Iraqi Communist Party

IRBIL, May 3 (KUNA) -- Gunmen assassinated on Thursday an official of the Iraqi Communist Party in the northern city of Mosul, police said.

A police source in Mosul told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the gunmen shot dead Muthanna Mohammed Taleb, also known as Abu Thabet, in front of his house in the district of Al-Baladiat in the northern city.

Touching on other incidents, the source said authorities located 64 dead bodies of unidentified persons in various spots in the governorate of Mosul over the past week, which also witnessed explosion of 29 bombs, firing of 23 mortar shells on security positions and a spate of armed clashes between insurgents and government forces.

In Kirkuk, security forces apprehended, today, three suspected insurgents in the center of the northern oil-rich city. In the city of Al-Sulaimaniah, also located in the north of Iraq, Brigadier Hassan Mohammad, a security official, told journalists that the authorities detained 14 gunmen, suspected members of Islamic groups.

The detainees confessed to planning an attack with chemical agents with a small aircraft, to be flown with a remote control. The group were trained on operating the plane in a neighboring country.

Members of the network had undergone intensive training in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
