GOP debate focuses on Iraq war, abortion

By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Alone among 10 Republican presidential contenders, Rudy Giuliani said in campaign debate Thursday night "it would be OK" if the Supreme Court upholds a 1973 landmark abortion rights ruling. "It would be OK to repeal it. It would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as precedent," said the former New York city mayor, who has a record of supporting abortion rights.

In a party that draws strength from anti-abortion voters, Giuliani's nine GOP rivals agreed that it would be a great day if the court overturns the landmark ruling.

"Glorious day of human liberty and freedom," enthused Sen. Sam Brownback (news, bio, voting record) of Kansas.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney acknowledged he had changed his mind on the subject when he began to delve into the issue of cloning. He said his position had once effectively been "pro-choice."

But Giuliani, who said he personally hates abortion, hedged when asked about his current position.

"I think the Court has to make that decision and then the country can deal with it," he said. "... The states could then make their own decisions."

3. I didn't see it. Could it be that that's an issue they know they can discuss,
after the SCOTUS' recent decision, that no one would take issue with? Or did the hate really come out?

10. We know they're not going to further change abortion laws, but
the more they trumpet anti-choice the more they, in essence, say that they hate women. According to them, women must be subservient Christians.

7. Republican economics: Force women to bear children who will grow up to be...
cannon fodder for corporate resource wars and war profiteers.

I can't reconcile their two opposing positions on the "sacredness of life" any other way. They think fetuses are sacred and should always live, no matter the cost in the mother's life or welfare, and, once grown, those same children are expendable in unjust war.

Not to mention their hypocrisy with regard to the children of Iraq: tens of thousands slaughtered in the initial bombing, others suffering death from starvation and disease from 12 years of cruel sanctions and endless war, and some even tortured at Abu Ghraib. The "sacredness of life" is a putrid demon in their mouths that flies out when they speak. They are, bar none, the most outrageous hypocrites who ever lived.

9. A thought or two
Reaping what they Sow

It seems to me that for some years the GOP has been cultivating a strong, cult like atmosphere in their party. A type of fanaticism for party that boarders on the religious. This has been accomplished in several ways. Using actual religion is one, making the GOP to be the 'party of god', and demonizing everyone else as a godless party. They turned liberal into a dirty word. Encouraging the thinking that Democrat=Liberal=socialis t=Stalin while Republican=America=God. The result is a party that deals in slogans and strawmen, in party over everything else.

Why do this? For one thing it makes the people easier to control. Whatever you want to do all you need is to get the people (who are predisposed to accept whatever you say anyway) to believe it is in line with the party's values, and the other party is against it. It cuts out actual debate where the merits of any idea would be examined. The idea of debate is disparaged as a time waster, preventing action that needs to take place. You can see it in the PR. The Democrats have a debate on a serious issue, discussing different ideas to get at the best one, they are depicted as being disorganized and confused, divided. Meanwhile the group think of the GOP is shown as a strength where everyone is in agreement, walking lockstep. Rush listeners even proudly call themselves 'ditto heads', reveling in their abdicating individual thought for being told what to think.

It is what made a party policies are detrimental to most people so strong. But now the group think is biting them in the butt. They have finally hit the wall of reality in the form of Iraq. The politicians, some of them at least, see the reality. They see that it is a mess, that it is a complete failure and what it is doing to our military, and our standing in the world. But now the problem. The party's group think has been programmed that the war is a good thing. That anyone who is against it is a commie liberal peacenick determined to destroy America.

If those running for office start to actually deal with reality then they will be torn apart by their party. But they can't continue to ignore reality because the rest of the country will see them as lunatics and they will not be able to win an election. What is a cult leader to do when the cult is determined to commit suicide?

11. CNN live blogging of the debate is pretty funny.
Check it out.

http://time-blog.com/swampland/2007/05/liveblogging_the_gop_reagan_li.html

A sample:

8:07PM: Tommy Thompson and his GIANT EARS OF JUSTICE.
8:08PM: Duncan Hunter: "The key to winning in Iraq is standing up the Iraqi military." No, then they'll just get mad and not put out.
8:09PM: Not fond of the walking across the stage to hand-deliver the emailed questions. Also, what the f*** did Romney just say? "If we wanted a President who just followed the polls, all we'd need to do is plug in our TVs have them run the country"? What? TVs follow polls? Our polls think we're gay? Huh? Huh? Extraneous Reagan reference. Drink!
8:10PM: Brownback is wielding a pen. But he's just kinda holding it. It looks less like he's taking notes than he just forgot to put it down
8:12PM: Harris, please sit down. NO WALKING ACROSS THE STAGE UNLESS YOU'RE DELIVERING WATER.
8:13PM Huckabee wants us to listen to "the generals with blood on their boots." Wow, things are bad.

12. Were there any Hardball questions at all?
Like, what about the price of gas and the effect it has on people's personal lives? Of course, none of these guys buys his own gas, and whether it's $1.50 a gallon or $3.50 a gallon has no discernible effect on their lives.
