State looks to pull anti-Bush license plate
Source: Rapid City Journal

RAPID CITY -- Heather Moriah loves the personalized license plates on her silver Prius encouraging the impeachment of President George W. Bush.

But somebody doesn’t agree. And that somebody complained to the state. Now, the South Dakota Division of Motor Vehicles is trying to recall the plates -- which read MPEACHW. And if Moriah doesn’t turn them in voluntarily, the state might send law-enforcement officers to pick them up.

Even so, she’s not immediately inclined to cooperate.

“I don’t think I’m going to play,” Moriah said Thursday afternoon. “The plate isn’t in poor taste. It‘s not sexual in nature or pornographic. To me, a political message should not be considered offensive.”

53. As I suggested in the Discussion -Politics section...
Someone should request a list of all of the personalized plates to review whether they are offensive too. Using the state FOIA making sure that personal information is not requested of the individuals so they can't deny the FOIA request.

40. what it means
Edited on Fri May-04-07 06:50 PM by Greyskye
To "86" something is old slang that means to "get rid of". "43" is the 43rd POTUS (shrub).

Therefore, 86 43 means...

I've had the same message on the white board outside my cubelet for the past year or so. Nobody here gets it either. Guess I'm an old fart.

46. I had to look up the "14" part...
From the Urban Dictionary:

a term recognized by white supremists.

14 representing 14 words written by David Lane, "We must secure the existance of our people and a future for white children."

88 representing David Lane's 88 precepts, or sometimes the eighth letter in the alphabet (H), to represent Heil Hitler.

my father got '14/88' tattooed on his arm to advertize his white pride

12. So let me get this straight.
The Right, The Government, and their well paid Goons (Media, etc.) can threaten us, physically attack us, publicly call for us to be imprisoned, executed, destroyed, have our jobs taken away, question our patriotism, shred the constitution, and pretty much break any law they want in the name of towing the party line.

But when we express any kind of disagreement with that they are doing, we get arrested.

America is Dead.

Long Live The Brave New World.

57. Technically I would say the plates belong to Heather because they are not considered valid
Under SD law all license plates are state property as long as they are valid for use on the vehicle. When the plates are no longer valid, expire or whatever the car owner can keep or throw them away.

The BMV could just send her new standard plates and instruct her that they must be attached to her vehicle. If she is stopped by law enforcement without them attached she would be violation of state law.

The question is whether she could put her personal plates in the rear of her window.

I WAS WONDERING...

Does SD utilize front and back for their license plates or just the front or just the back?

There must be commercialized plates that can be bought that express her sentiments. Even utilizing it to fit around the plates.

72. Anti-Bush license plates may be recalled
Source: Sioux Falls Argus Leader

A Rapid City woman's personalized license plates have raised the hackles of at least one citizen whose complaint might lead the state to recall the plates.

Heather Morijah mounted personalized plates which read "MPEACHW," on her silver 2005 Prius to encourage the impeachment of President George W. Bush. Now, the South Dakota Division of Motor Vehicles is trying to recall the vanity plates, and said they might send law enforcement to fetch the plates if Morijah fails to voluntarily turn in the plates within 10 days.

State law allows for the recall of plates. The law declares motor vehicle plates to be the property of the state as long as the plates are valid. The law also allows personalized plates with as many as seven letters for an extra $25 fee. But it gives DMV officials the right to refuse to issue "any letter combination which carries connotations offensive to good taste and decency."

A formal written complaint must be filed with the Division of Motor Vehicles, and state law allows for even a single complaint to lead to the recall of license plates, said Deb Hillmer, DMV director.

74. I hope she sues
Her plate discusses a POLITICAL PROCESS...it isn't OFFENSIVE (they did it to Clinton, after all) and it isn't INDECENT, either. I hope she reveals the name of the whiner in the process, too. After all, she should have the right to confront her accuser.

Where's the frigging ACLU?

They're muzzling her right of free speech because a fundie - rightie is upset. They'd better start recalling all of the variations of Praise The Lord and any of that Jesus shit, too, if they're going after this woman.

What asswipes.

82. south dakotans should start a massive campaign of complaints for ALL personal plates...
if they are overwhelmed with complaints about thousands of various personal plates, they'll have to give up, and allow all those that have already been issued.

It is also illegal to drive a car with the plates "M" next to a car with plates "PEACH" next to a car with plates "W" because you might piss off an idiot.
