Edited on Fri May-04-07 04:53 PM by Shakespeare
Source: KABC-TV Los Angeles

The LAPD received a 911 call generated from Union Station around 10:30 Friday morning, relaying some kind of threat against the bridge.

The Vincent Thomas Bridge is a 1,500-foot long suspension bridge crossing the Los Angeles Harbor linking San Pedro, California with Terminal Island. The bridge is signed as part of California State Highway 47. It is named for California Assemblyman Vincent Thomas of San Pedro.

Edited to include updated link.

This bridge has long been one of the top terrorist targets in LA; hope this is just a false alarm.

2. Do terrorists
usually give prior warning? I know they have to error on the side of caution but this sounds like a prank; a criminal prank that should be prosecuted if they catch the culprit.

3. Bomb threats annoy the shit out of me, as do the cowardly reactions of the cops
Bombers that are actually gonna bomb are NOT gonna tell anyone, because then no one would get hurt, the bomb might be disabled and the perp stands a much better chance of being caught.

Just like with dick size, when someone talks about it, they don't have it.

5. Sometimes bomb threats are just that - threats. Don't know why. (?) And kudos to
the CHP for following up, on foot. I support the response. Seems they have to act on a 'better safe than sorry' premise.

10. I don't remember any threats with real bombs.
I don't remember hearing about any real bombs found when the authorities have been following up on bomb threats.
I think bomb threats and real bombs are two separate items.

11. bomb threats could be real, if the bomber wants money.
But I'm pretty sure that only happens in movies. People of that technical caliber would most likely just get a job.

4. Used to take it driving down from LA to Long Beach, ...
skirting by San Pedro. Much nicer than fighting the traffic on the 405.

13. We drove the kids over it a couple of weeks ago.
Cool drive.

Maybe I'm being too tin-foily, but I can't help being suspicious about what happened to the bridge in San Francisco. Yeah, some guy rammed it. Anybody ever look into him and what he was about? Did we ever get something out of that other than he had some DUIs on his record?

6. Nothing to worry

Jack Bauer will surely drive the 25-40 minutes from CTU to the bridge in about the time it takes for a station break. He will then interrogate a suspect who will yield crucial data after less than 5 seconds of "encouragement" at which point the "Tac-Team" which happens to be in the air will land within seconds and thwart the plot.

But one of the CTU agents will talk on a separate, private cell phone to one of the plotters and give them info which will allow them to escape with one of the {bombs|vials of virus|circuit boards} in a cigarette boat which the tac team helicopter will somehow not be able to stop.

In pursuing the cigarette boat, Jack will be captured by the {chinese|russian ultranationalists|middle eastern} agents and taken abroad for extended torture and interrogation, but will show up in hour 1 of the show next year.

Does that pretty much sum it up?

8. Nah, you forgot the "cuts"

to Jack's wife/daughter/lover/office assistant who is, at the same time, about to travel across the bridge to visit a relative/attend a strategy meeting/get her hair done, she only has time to call CTU/Jack's OTHER cell phone/The President of the US to update the recipient on her plans.

9. Once upon a time...
Or maybe twice...
There were some terrorist groups who would plant a bomb, tell the police sort of where it was and when it would detonate, and cause big disruptions but few casualties.
The IRA was famous for it.
